An historian interested in British and American intellectual history, James Turner, after earning B.A., A.M., and Ph.D. degrees in history from Harvard University, taught at the College of Charleston (1975-1977), the University of Massachusetts, Boston (1977-1985), the University of Michigan (1985-1995), and the University of Notre Dame (1995- present), where he directed the Erasmus Institute.
