(* - Confidential) RELATIONSHIP OF THE FELLOWSHIP OF RECONCILIATION TO THE CATHOLIC PEACE FELLOWSHIP The following seven boxes (11-17) include material related to the Fellowship of Reconciliation (FOR). The FOR began in 1914 as a movement of Christian protest against war. As this primarily Protestan organization expanded, the emphasis on opposition to war was not enouth and the group began to focus on a commitment to the building of a peaceful society; to the task of confronting human differences with the spirit of nonviolent love, compassion and reconciliation. Over the years religious groups specifically interested in peace, conscientiuos objection and interfaith activity functioned in conjunction with the FOR and in the early 1960's it became evident to several members of the FOR that such an organization of Catholics was needed. Hence, in 1963 the Catholic Peace Fellowship (CPF) began to fall together around the encouragement of John Heidbrink (FOR Church World Secretary), with James Forest, Marty Corbin and Philip Berregin as co-chairmen, their primary task being the initiation of educational programs to better acquaint Catholics with the tradition of the church in regard to war and peace. People joining the CPF became simultaneously members of the FOR and the FOR continues to play an active role in many denominational affiliates including the CPF.
