- MEWI : Thomas Ewing: Microfilm
The Thomas Ewing Papers which form the basis of this microfilm publication are part of a larger collection of Ewing Family Papers which was acquired from the estate of John G. Ewing following his death in 1927. John, the son of Philemon B. Ewing and grandson of Thomas Ewing, had once taught history and political economy at the University of Notre Dame. Other series within the collection include the Philemon B. Ewing Papers and the John G. Ewing Papers. These have not been microfilmed. However, letters written by Thomas Ewing and found within these series have been removed and filmed as a separate subseries within this microfilm publication. They will be found on reel six.
Upon their acquisition by the University of Notre Dame Archives, the Ewing Family Papers were separated into the above mentioned categories and within each category, were placed, where possible, in chronological sequence. At one time a start was made at calendaring the Thomas Ewing series. However, these calendars, of which there are manuscript copies, were never completed and, consequently, have not been filmed. No very extensive use has been made as yet of this collection. Indeed, it is not even listed in the 1933 doctoral dissertation on Thomas Ewing by Paul I. Miller.
There are two other major collections of Thomas Ewing Papers. One -- an extensive collection which includes both the Thomas Ewing Family Papers and the Charles Ewing Family Papers -- is in the possession of the Library of Congress. The other -- a smaller collection -- is in the possession of the Ohio Historical Society, formerly the Ohio State Archaelogical and Historical Society. Descriptions of other collections which contain Thomas Ewing papers may be found in Paul I. Miller's Thomas Ewing: Last of the Whigs(Ohio State University, 1933), as well as in Philip M. Hamer's Guide to Archives and Manuscripts in the United States(Yale University Press,1961), and the National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections.
Editorial Procedure
Prior to the inception of this microfilm project the Thomas Ewing Papers at the University of Notre Dame Archives had been broken down into several series: correspondence, which consisted of two subseries -- personal letters and business letters; miscellaneous papers, which included speeches, financial papers, legal papers, and clippings; and bound items which included various letter books, dockets and account books. The correspondence had been arranged in a rough chronological order and, at one time, a start had been made on calendaring it. However, these calendars, of which there are handwritten copies for some of the letters, were never completed.
As a part of the present project, the chronological arrangement of the Ewing correspondence has been perfected, the personal letters and the business letters, separation of which was not perfect, have been grouped together in the same overall chronological arrangement, and an alphabetical listing of correspondents has been prepared. In a number of instances previously undated items have been supplied with dates. These have been placed in brackets in the upper right hand corner of the first page of the particular item. Question marks have been used to indicate questionable dates. Items dated only by year have been placed at the beginning of that year. Items dated by month and year have been placed at the bginning of that month. Enclosures, where they exist, have been placed immediately after their cover letters. Both incoming letters and drafts for outgoing letters have been placed in the same overall chronological ordering of items. Undated items have been arranged in an alphabetical order based upon the writer's name, and placed after the dated correspondence.
Papers related to Ewing's law practice have been identified, separated from other items, and arranged in a special series. Where possible these have been dated and arranged chronologically. Otherwise, they have been arranged alphabetically according to their subject matter. Dockets, Cash Books, and Letter Books relating to the practice of law have been included in this series and will be filmed exactly as they appear. In several instances this involves the inclusion of an item which does not appear to be directly related to Ewing's law practice. Several of the books used for keeping records of the cases handled by Ewing also contain records, of an earlier date, of the Lancaster Ohio Insurance Company in which Ewing held two hundred shares. These pages have been filmed as they appear in the particular books involved.
The remainder of the items in the Collection have been identified and separated into appropriate series. These include: material relating to Ewing's tenure as Secretary of the Interior, which consists of two letter books; financial papers which consist of various bills and receipts, bank books, and account books; and miscellaneous clippings. Finally, there have been added to the Thomas Ewing Collection, in separate series, relevant material found in other Collections, particularly the Philemon B. Ewing Papers and the William Tecumseh Sherman Family Papers, in the possession of the University of Notre Dame Archives. Although in most instances these items are letters, they have not been included in the alphabetical list of correspondents.
In addition to the alphabetical list of correspondents which appears both in this guide and on the first reel of microfilm, there has been prepared, as an aid to filming as well as an aid to users, a list of items microfilmed in the order microfilmed. This list will be found in its entirety on reel one. In addition, that portion of the list pertaining to each particular reel will be found as part of the reel.
As an aid to identification and citation, each frame on each reel has been given a specific number which will be found on the lower right hand corner of the frame. No matter how careful the editors and the filmers have been, there are bound to be cases where, after a whole reel has been filmed, it becomes necessary to either add or delete a frame or several frames. Obviously, this throws off the numerical sequence of the frame numbers. To meet this difficulty we have employed the following technique: when a frame has had to be deleted, the number assigned to that frame simply does not appear. While these procedures are a compromise with perfection, they are realistic in terms of the problems which unfortunately arise in microfilming, especially when the alternative might well involve several refilmings of an entire reel. Throughout the microfilm, targets have been used to identify various items, to call the scholar's attention to various defects in the documents which might otherwise be thought to have been due to faulty microfilming, and to point up special problems that have arisen in arranging and microfilming the collection. Targets have not been used in cases, such as for torn or mutilated pages, where the defects should be readily apparent.
Description of the Collection
A complete list of all items microfilmed, in the order microfilmed will be found on reel one. In addition, each reel contains a complete list of all the items which appear on that reel.
- MEWI 1 Reel : General Introduction, Genealogical Chart, Description of the Library of Congress' Ewing Family Collection, Alphabetical List of Correspondents, List of Items Microfilmed, and Correspondence, 1815-1832.
The major portion of the correspondence to be found on this reel is connected with Ewing's practice of law. However, interspersed with this are a substantial number of personal letters -- mainly from his wife, Maria Boyle Ewing -- and a few letters, chiefly from 1827 on, of political import. All have been arranged in one over-all chronological series. The first item of correspondence, dated January 11, 1815, is from CharlesEwing, a cousin who was a prominent member of the New Jersey Bar and subsequently Chief Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court, giving young Tom some helpful advise as he prepared to embark upon the study of law. Other items of special interest include: several letters of 1827 relative to Ewing's attendance at the Harrisburg Convention of Friends of Farming and Manufacturing and his attachment to Clay's "American System" as well as to his support for the Adams Administration; several letters of 1827 and 1829 bearing upon his connection with the Lancaster Lateral Canal Company; and a letter of June 17, 1832, from Charles Hammond, a leading member of the Ohio Bar and editor of the Cincinnati Gazette, discussing the prospects for the anti-Jackson forces in Ohio and in the country at large.
- MEWI 2 Reel : Correspondence, 1833-1872; Undated Correspondence; Miscellaneous Memoranda, Notes, Drafts, and Documents, 1826-1868; and Miscellaneous Undated Memoranda, Notes, Drafts, and Documents.
This reel continues, to its completion, the correspondence portion of the Thomas Ewing Papers proper. Once again, the major emphasis is upon Ewing's law practice with heavy emphasis also upon his other business enterprises and particularly his land holdings. However, there are also a substantial number of personal letters and a number of letters of political importance. Significant and interesting items include: P. Hitchcock's letter of December 11, 1836, regarding the organization of the Ohio Legislature and the prospects for the election of a United States Senator; a copy from the Marietta Intelligence of July 30, 1840, of a letter from Ewing to L.D. Barker respecting the approaching presidential election; a copy of a letter December 6, 1840, to William Henry Harrison regarding the proposed selection of Ewing as Postmaster General; a number of items in 1849 and 1850 bearing upon Ewing's service as Secretary of the Interior and including President Fillmore's letter of July 20, 1850, accepting his resignation; Governor Seabury Ford's proclamation of July 20, 1850, naming Ewing United States Senator; a copy of a letter of April 17, 1854, to J. Teesdale in which Ewing sets forth his views on the slavery question and urges a policy of moderation in regard to the Kansas-Nebraska dispute; a "suppressed part" of a letter of 1862 to Benjamin Stanton defending General Grant, Sherman, and Prentiss against Stanton's charge of incompetence and misconduct; a copy of a letter of April 19, 1864, to President Abraham Lincoln suggesting the use of compressed air to power steamships; a draft for an unsent letter of April 30, 1869, to some unknown correspondent disputing Grant's fitness for the Presidency; and a copy of a letter of July 5, 1870, to the Pall Mall Gazette defending Cardinal Paul Cullen, Archbishop of Dublin, against a charge of immoral teachings. The majority of the letters from 1866 on are connected with Ewing's real estate holdings. The dated Correspondence is followed by seven undated letters arranged alphabetically by author. They include one from Thomas Corwin relative to the establishment of a Bureau of Agriculture in the Department of the Interior and two by Ewing himself. The next series of items consists of miscellaneous memoranda, notes, drafts and documents. Those which bear dates or have been dated by us range from 1826-1868. All, both dated and undated, have substantial research value.
- MEWI 3 Reel : Law papers.
Featured on this reel are various legal papers, most of which are related directly to Ewing's practice. The first series of items, arranged chronologically, consists of miscellaneous law papers ranging from 1804 to 1871. This is followed by various undated law papers arranged alphabetically. The final two items on the reel are bound volumes related to the practice of law by Ewing in partnership with his son, Philemon. The first of these is a Docket Book for the firm of T. Ewing and Son which covers the years 1843 to 1849 and summarizes the disposition of each case handled. Included is an alphabetical index of the cases. This is followed by the final item on th reel, a Letter Book for the firm of T. Ewing and Son which covers the span from January 26, 1843, to December 28, 1847, and contains copies of outgoing letters from the firm. Apparently the book had once been used as a Letter Book for the Lancaster Ohio Insurance Company of which Ewing owned two hundred shares. There are a number of pages at the front of the volume which are tied together witha ribbon and which bear copies of outgoing letters dated from August 29, 1835, to January 7, 1840, and signed by John Garaghty, the company's secretary. In filming the book, we have taken: first, these letters, then, an index, found in the rear of the volume, for the letters of T. Ewing and Son; and, finally the letters of that firm.
- MEWI 4 Reel : Law papers; and Department of the Interior.
The initial three items on this reel continue and complete the papers relating to Thomas Ewing's law practice. The first of these is "Letter Book #2" of the firm of T. Ewing and Son featuring outgoing letters for the period from January 3, 1848 to January 16, 1852. This book had once been used for the records of the Lancaster Ohio Insurance Company. The pages so used, covering the span from August 29, 1835, to January 7, 1840, are at the front of the volume and were tied together with a ribbon. They have been filmed first. Next, there has been filmed the index, found at the rear of the volume, for the outgoing letters of the firm of T. Ewing and Son; then, a list of agents for the firm; and, finally, the letters themselves. The second item on the reel is a Cash Book, covering the years 1843-1855, for the firm of T. Ewing and Son. Apparently, the blank pages at the end of the volume were once used for a stamp collection. These pages have not been filmed. However, an index for the stamp collection, found at the front of the volume has been filmed. The next and final item relating to Ewing's law practices is a "Proposition and Answering Book" for the years 1853 to 1858 which contains summaries of cases handled during that span. Once again there is to be found at the front of the volume a number of pages, tied together with a ribbon, which relate to the Lancaster Ohio Insurance Company. In this case, the material concerns payment of dividends by the Company in 1835-1836. The final series of items on the reel consists of two Letter Books compiled while Ewing was serving as Secretary of the Interior. The first of these, labelled "Miscellaneous Semi-Official No. 1," covers the period from May 1849 to July 1850 and consists almost entirely of copies of outgoing letters relating to appointments to office. An index, found at the end of the volume, has been filmed before the letters themselves. A copy of it appears at the end of this Guide. Of particular interest are several letters in reply to requests made by Abraham Lincoln. The second of these Department of the Interior Books -- the final item on the reel -- is labelled "Private" and, covering the period from March 1849 to July 1850, contains copies of letters dealing with such diverse matters as politics, the distribution of patronage, and Ewing's law practice. It is especially valuable for the insights which it gives as to Ewing's state of mind, and particularly his respect for President Taylor, while serving in the Cabinet.
- MEWI 5 Reel : Financial Papers; and Clippings.
The first series of items on this reel relates to financial matters and includes: various bills and receipts for the period from 1833 to 1871, arranged chronologically; various undated bills and receipts, arranged alphabetically; thirteen bankbooks for the period from January 27, 1854, to November 16, 1868; a record of Ewing's Assets and Liabilities for the period from August 3, 1857, to March 2, 1867; accounts for the "Berne Estate," which Ewing apparently handled, for the years 1852 to 1855; and two account books containing records of the Zanesville and Maysville Turnpike for the years 1838 to 1843 and 1853 to 1855, respectively. The second and final series consists of nine newspaper clippings which cover the period from 1859 to 1870. Most of the bills and receipts, with which the reel begins, have notations on the reverse side. In filming, we have taken, first, the face of the item itself and, then, the side bearing the notation.
- MEWI 6 Reel : Material from the Philemon B. Ewing Papers and material from the William Tecumseh Sherman Family Papers.
The first grouping on this reel consists of 189 items selected from the Philemon B. Ewing Papers for filming as part of this microfilm publication. Philemon was Thomas Ewing's son and, for a number of years, law partner. His papers constitute a separate subseries within the Ewing Family Papers in the possession of the University of Notre Dame Archives. The items selected for filming, most of which are letters from Ewing to his son, concern mainly legal and business matters. Especially significant among the few exceptions is a rough draft written in 1861 of a proposed address touching upon the Civil War. Items which bear dates or have been dated by us have been arranged chronologically. A few undated items will be found after the dated material. The material from the University of Notre Dame Archives' Collection of the William Tecumseh Sherman Family Papers, filmed as the second and final series on this reel and the final series in this publication, is more extensive and much more varied. In addition to correspondence, there are also among the 275 items filmed various documents, clippings, scrapbooks and photographs. The correspondence, most of which was between Ewing and members of his family -- Sherman was raised by the Ewings and his wife, Ellen, was a daughter of Thomas Ewing -- varies from originals to photostatic copies, typewritten copies and handwritten copies. The Collection itself was the gift of the late Miss Eleanor Sherman Fitch, a granddaughter of General Sherman and great granddaughter of Thomas Ewing. For years prior to her death Miss Fitch had been gathering material concerning her family, acquiring copies of items in the possession of others, making copies of items in her own possession, arranging the material thus amassed, and adding thereto her own notations -- frequently on the papers themselves. Unfortunately, she did not complete the work of arranging the over-all collection. However, where she did construct meaningful groupings, these have been adhered to in filming the items selected for inclusion in this microfilm publication. Items within each grouping have been filmed in chronological sequence with undated items pertaining to the particular grouping coming last. Where, as frequently occurs, we possess both the original and a copy, only the original has been microfilmed.
