- CHJC I.c.3. Subseries : Finance Office
The American Province of the Poor Handmaids has always had a financial officer, at various times called the Procurator, Financial Coordinator, Finance Commissioner, Director of Finance or Treasurer. For the early period of its history, however, many of the business transactions were handled by the Provincial with her Vicaress. Since at least the restructuring of 1971-1973 the role of the financial officer has been more clearly defined. From 1973-1976 the Commissioner of the Finance Commission served as a member of the Provinicial Council. In 1976 it was decided that Treasurer / Finance Commissioner would be a non-voting member of the Provincial Council appointed by the Provincial Team. Generally, the financial officer of the Province has also served as Treasurer of the Corporation.
Following is a list of Procurators / Finance Commissioners / Treasurers (for the early period only an incomplete list can be gleaned from the community Chronicle; for the period between the post- Vatican II Provincial Chapters of 1966 and 1972 there is fluctuation in the titles):
(Procurators)
Sr. M. Facunda: 1868-? (became 2nd Assistant Provincial in 1870)
Sr. M. Lucia: 3/30/1878-9/2/1878 (died in office)
Sr. M. Radegundis: 1878-? (became 1st Assistant Provincial in 1885, died 1889)
Sr. M. Bertha Brommel: ?1912-1949 (is Treasurer when Corporate records begin)
Sr. M. Symphoria Miller: 1949-1961
(Mother M. Eudoxia Healy, 1st Assistant Provincial, served as Treasurer, 1949-1955)
Sr. M. Hermanda Miller: 1961-1970?
Sr. M. Symphoria Miller: 1970-1971 (is Treasurer when new Articles of Incorporation are adopted in August 1970)
Sr. M. Marien Plotzke: 1971-1973 (named "Financial Coordinator" in May 1971 after Sr. Symphoria resigns from the Provincial Council)
(Finance Commissioners)
Sr. M. Marien Plotzke: 1973-1981
Sr. M. Margery Krebs: 1981-1984
Sr. Mary Joseph Shingler: 1984-1988
(Treasurer)
Sr. Mary Joseph Shingler: 1988-1994
Sr. M. Jolise May: 1994-1997
Since for the earlier period it was not generally possible to separate the Procurator / Treasurer records from Provincial records, a decision was made to put the financial files from all periods with the Financial Office records unless a clear distinction could be made.

- CHJC 79/;248/01 Subseries : Ledgers of Assets and Liabilities for Motherhouse and Hospitals 1937-1970
Ledgers of Assets and Liabilities, Operating and Non-Operating Income and Expenses for the Motherhouse and the Hospitals and Homes owned and operated by the Poor Handmaids after 1936. In 1936 the American Province of the Poor Handmaids obtained a loan from the Northwest Mutual Life Insurance Company in order to consolidate the debt on all properties owned and operated by the community. In connection with this loan, all the property was transferred to the Ancilla Domini Sisters, Inc., and mortgaged to the insurance company. All other corporations of the Poor Handmaids were dissolved. At this time new accounting procedures were introduced to manage the mortgaged properties. These procedures produced a) a 10" X 24" Ledger of Consolidated Cumulative Statements for the years 1937-1961. The data in this ledger are derived from monthly reports sent to the motherhouse and kept in b) a General Ledger of Assets and Liabilities by designated accounts for the Motherhouse and Hospitals for the years 1938-1962 compiled from monthly reports sent to the Motherhouse. This information is continued for the Motherhouse for 1963-1970 in c) an Account Ledger, and for 1970-1980 in d) Monthly Interim Financial Statements. There is also e) an incomplete series of Monthly Interim Financial Statements for 1980-1985 for Ancilla Domini Health Services and the Hospitals. In these ledgers assets, liabilities, income and expenses are all separated into numerous accounts. For the period covered by the Consolidated Cumulative Statements Ledger (1937-1961) only end-of-year reports and General Ledger pages were retained. All ledger pages and reports were retained for the period after 1961. The material was put into folders and the binders discarded. Financial information for the period before 1937 for the Hospitals and Homes as well as Schools and Orphanages can be found in quarterly and annual reports sent to the Motherhouse which are located in Independent Series.
