Critique on the Hochhuth play for the NCCJ. Fourth of four attached. ~ Zahn feels that the pope is displayed in an uncharitable light, but that Americans must look past that. Zahn hopes that Americans can watch this play and judge it for its artistic and historical merit or dismerit. He further hopes that it can be used to display America's maturity in accepting religious pluralism.

Critique of the Hochuth play. Third of four attached. ~ Graham feels that it is a shame that the play will be produced due to the way that it judges Pope Pius XII as a criminal. The pope had always been respected and praised, even by Jews, for his role in WWII. Graham believes that the play will greatly offend many Catholics and other Americans.

"The Trial of Pope Pius XII" ~ An essay regarding the play, "The Deputy." Attached to the letter from Tom. ~ The play, "The Deputy" is an unfair and cruel attack on the Pope, but does raise some real issues. The play, although poorly written, does addresss the issue of the image of the Papal position interfering with the moral obligation to humanity.

"A Question of Judgement: Pius XII and the Jews" ~ This is a small booklet written for the National Catholic Welfare Conference. ~ Lichten explores Pius XII's sin of omission in his lack of a statement against the genocide of WWII. Lichten feels that the play "The Deputy" was unfair to Pius XII and that the Pope did what he felt would have the best results for the Jews at the time.
