Letter written by Gordon to Father Leuver, C. M. F. , Editor of THE U. S. CATHOLIC. Attached to the letter is a profile of Gordon written by Bruce Cook for U. S. CATHOLIC and Gordon's printed response in the same publication. ~ Gordon writes to the editor to clear up two points that he felt were made incorrectly in Bruce Cook's profile of him. Other than these two points however, he was pleased with the article and thanks the editor for bringing his (Gordon's) opinions to their readers. He says that any misinterpretation of what he said in the interview was surely his lack of clarity, not Mr. Cook's fault. One point he wants to make quite straight is that he believes that the Vietnam war is an unjust war and that the U. S. should disengage itself from such a hypocritical situation. He also wanted to clarify that he was not the very first conscientious objector, that there had been some back in the days of of the "first centuries of church history when they tried to put the power of non-violence to the test in overcoming a pagan empire bent on their destruction!" Gordon hopes that his clarifications can be printed in the U. S. CATHOLIC.

He states that Loyola was much more traditional and conservative in its views of authority and discipline (at the expense of truly democratic student and faculty involvement) and that University of Mass. in Boston provides many more opportunities for the students and faculty to have autonomy and responsibility regarding decisions of the University. Gordon says that as we look back on these times the moral question shifts to whether it might have been more appropriate to take a public stand against the unjust wars being waged by this regime and its all-out attempt to exterminate the Jews in Europe.

A review of THREE POPES AND THE JEWS by Pinchas Lapide. ~ Gordon says that Lapide sets out to refute the thesis advanced by Rolf Hochhuth and others who have charged the wartime Pope with varying degrees of responsibility for the Nazi program for the extermination of European Jewry. Gordon says that in the process, Lapide has compiled "an impressive and extremely well-documented review of the unceasing efforts of Pius to save the lives of as many Jews as possible and the extent to which those efforts did succeed."

He touches over the book's major points: a section discussing Bonhoeffer's younger sister is unforgetable for Gordon.

Gordon says that Dickinson heavily stresses Stein's love for Germany and his faith in the basic decency of the German people as well as a growing sense of "duty" toward his otherwise completely helpless clients.

The writer doesn't understand why it is considered immoral to bomb North Vietnam when both sides bombed Coventry, Dresden, Hamburg. He believes that the "communists initiated the use of force and insist on the continuance of deliberate terror and killing of civilians in a world-wide drive to destroy uncommunist governments. Thus, if our "counterforce kills communist-controlled civilians, horrible as the choice may be, let our bombs kill those civilians rather than our American GI's."
