  Ed Skillin with a short note to Zahn attatched to Steinfels' article ~ Just War Theory: A Question ~ 1-page essay concerning just war theory ~ Steinfels speaks of the evils of the Vietnam war and quotes Zahn saying that the war is not over until all the loose ends are tied up and the lesson is learned. Steinfels questions Zahn's position that a tribunal council should meet and try to retrospectively apply the just war theory (in order to ultimately prove the theory is outdated). Steinfels says that the theory is useful, however it is difficult to apply "prospectively," especially the priciple of proportionality because it is impossible to predict the extent of the escalation of the war. ~ Commonweal ~ 478

  "Religion and Politics in Germany" ~ Book review of "The Churches and Politics in Germany" by Frederic Spotts in COMMONWEAL. ~ Gordon credits Spotts with a thorough, well-balanced and detailed account of the history of church involvement in German Political affairs. He gives a summary of some of the involvements and activities of the church and asserts that the church has a right and even an obligation to use its influence in political affairs. Religious leaders have a role to play in the ordering of political affairs to serve the ends of justice, however mistakes of the past should not be repeated. ~ Commonweal ~ 511-12

The paper says that after an investigation, his complaints were considered fully justified and he was offered a full-time position, however Robert Steamer, Acting Dean, denied he was discriminated against because he belonged to a minority. Lee says that he wants acknowledgement from the university that discriminatory practices have occurred.

O'Rourke should have been allowed to continue with the baptism and should not have been dismissed from the Jesuit order, but could have been given less severe penalties. Gordon says that he suspects Fr. O'Rourke was set up and gives reasons why. He thinks it was set up to bring publicity to Catholics for a Free Choice.
