He says that instead of basking quietly in the prestige of his positions as retired archbishop, he used his prestige to support a variety of unpopular issues, such as to ban nuclear weapons and end the threat of nuclear war.

"Must Catholics Always Obey?" ~ 6-page article in St. Anthony Messenger by Gordon Zahn ~ Gordon describes Franz Jaegerstaetter and his refusal to fight in WWI on moral grounds, a stance for which he was beheaded. He tells of how the church failed to support him in his decision, and how in WWII there was still Catholic suspicion of COs. A change came during the Vietnam war when a surprisingly large amount of people claimed CO status, but Catholic COs were still discriminated against in their parishes and homes because there was no widespread change of attitude. Gordon says that in instances of war, legalization of abortion, and other instances a Christian is obliged to take a stand agaist secular authority. He contends that provisions should be made for CO status if conscription is reinstated, and that significant efforts should go into eliminating nuclear weapons. She thinks it will cause more division and anger in a time when repentance and reparations after the war are needed and necessary. She points out the massive amounts of ills caused to the Vietnamese by our country, and defends their slow progress toward reparations. 12/5--Gordon writes to Kathy saying that he approved the Appeal enthusiastically. He says that any acts or policies he considers evil must be opposed, even if the opposition is distorted or misinterpreted.

She says that he may have some impact on Right to Life supporters who use more radical measures and often turn off people who could otherwise be persuaded with reason. She asks if he will contact the Right to Life people. 9/23 -- Gordon responds saying that he has just written two pieces for publication criticising the tendency to make abortion a single and all-encompassing political issue.

He used his files as examples and was disappointed in the lack and exclusion of certain materials. Thus as a "clippings service" these government agencies proved "third-rate" indeed.

"Conscientious Objection as Christian Witness" ~ 2 drafts of an article written by Gordon entitled "Conscientious Objection as Christian Witness" written for NATIONAL CATHOLIC FAMILY MAGAZINE. The first draft was sent back to Gordon with suggestions from some readers. The second draft Gordon says is better due to the readers' suggestions and is sent back for publication. ~ Gordon summarizes the story of Franz Jaegerstaetter and his assessment of the morality of the war. He says that Catholics today do not have much better of a record that those who misunderstood and rejected Jaegerstaetter. Gordon says that those who chose a conscientious objection status during the Vietnam war, or those who defected to Canada because they were not accepted as conscientious objectors need to be welcomed home without penalty and be able to count on understanding a respect from their fellow Catholics, especially since they were fulfilling what they considered to be a moral obligation.

He points out his involvement with various cultural organizations and his commitment to multicultural positions.
