To suggest that political and military leaders give serious thought to "just war" teachings in modern war is an illusion. Last month when he was invited to be a commentator on a talk given by Ambassador Rowny at the symposium on "The Just War and Pacifism" he was shocked by his flat denial of the "pacifist" tradition of the Church. - CZHN 9/12795 Critique : Bobby Mattingly - Response to talk by Gordon 1987/1016
Gives a summary of Gordon's talk. Says that Gordon talked about how all wars are unjust and how in today's society we don't have to worry about the draft being reinstated. But, that in his time when the draft was reinstated they had a number of ways to get out of it. Says that Gordon discussed how we shouldn't fight with one another, but should make peace.

- CZHN 9/12783 Critique : Chris Matz - Response to talk by Gordon 1987/1016
He says that he agrees with some of what Gordon said about consciencious objection in the United States. However, the degree to which this objection is allowed should be limited. If everyone was objecting then there would be no one to fight for our country. He offers the solution that objectors could help our country in other ways such as public service or volunteering.

- CZHN 9/12793 Critique : Dan Chesto - Response to talk by Gordon 1987/1016
Respected the choice he made, but he does not believe that everyone should be compelled to follow his steps. He does not agree with him that no war is a just war, but feels that WWII was especially just. Says that we have a lot of privileges in this country and it is our responsibility to fight to keep those privileges.
- CZHN 9/12791 Critique : David Heip - Response to talk by Gordon 1987/1016
Admired the fact that Gordon achieved CO status in such a difficult time (World War II). Also, talked about how he enjoyed Gordon's discussion of the biography he did on John Leary. Said John was a graduate of Harvard and was involved in Peace and Interracial groups. He died at the age of 24 due to cardiac arrest.
- CZHN 9/12776 Critique : Jan Walters - Response to a talk by Gordon 1987/1016
He quotes Gordon, and mentions some of his previous books, concluding that the talk was interesting as he learned a lot about the draft laws and alternatives, though noting that he became bored during the presentation.
- CZHN 9/12789 Critique : Jeff Renneiser - Response to talk by Gordon 1987/1016
Believes that Gordon is a courageous man, but does not believe that what he was doing was right. Says that it is our duty to fight for our country, whether we think it is right or not.
- CZHN 9/12788 Critique : Jeff Rutledge - Response to talk by Gordon 1987/1016
He has mixed feelings about the idea of people who are conscientious objectors. On the one hand they are courageous for stand up for their beliefs. However, he believes that if we don't fight we could loose the values that we have worked so hard to gain. Does not know yet which side he will be on, but hopes that he will not be drafted.
- CZHN 9/12785 Critique : Jeff Seiden - Response to talk by Gordon 1987/1016
He says that he found Gordon's talk to be repetitious and tiring. He did not believe that he really cared about what other people in the class thought, but only cared about his beliefs. Overall, though, he admired Gordon's accomplishments and believed that he was truly fighting for the young men of today and their rights.
- CZHN 9/12781 Critique : Jim Higgins - Response to talk by Gordon 1987/1016
He talks about how Gordon made some interesting points that made his objection seem like a realistic alternative and did not make him sound like a "bleeding heart liberal. " Says this country is based on individualism and free choice and we need more people like Gordon making their voice and their dissent known.
- CZHN 9/12799 Critique : Jody Nalley - Response to talk by Gordon 1987/1016
Did not think that Gordon was a powerful speaker and believed that even when he was answering questions he was inadequate in his answers by frequently answering questions in a round about way. He also completely disagreed with Gordon's idea of letting the person decide if a war is just or not. Because, he believed, then no one would be fighting in the wars and defending our country.
- CZHN 9/12782 Critique : John Maguire - Response to talk by Gordon 1987/1016
He says that although he admired Gordon's courage during World War II, he still has some disagreements with his belief system. John believes that people have a duty to fight for their country. However, he does not believe that people should have blind obedience to their goverment. But they should not look out for only their individual interests, but rather trust that the government is looking out for the society as a whole.
- CZHN 9/12778 Critique : Larry Carriro - Response to talk by Gordon 1987/1016
He discusses his feelings regarding the validity of Gordon's statements, and notes that he is proud that his country has COs, simply because it shows a somewhat national respect for other countries.
- CZHN 9/12800 Critique : Larry Heck - Response to talk by Gordon 1987/1016
Disagrees with Gordon's statement that Christians and war should not mix because then without the Christians fighting the Germans might have won World War II. Thinks Gordon should look at the consequences of his beliefs. Believes that he is an intelligent man, but if we ever had a President like him the United States would be much worse off than it is now.
- CZHN 9/12794 Critique : Mark Potts - Response to talk by Gordon 1987/1016
Enjoyed the speech, but does not agree with what he was saying. Believes that everyone has a duty to fight for their country and if you don't want to fight you can take up a duty that doesn't require actual combat. Also, believes that war is sometimes the only answer. But everyone has a right to their own opinion.
- CZHN 9/12798 Critique : Mark Yedington - Response to talk by Gordon 1987/1016
Believed that Gordon made some really interesting points about C.O. Agrees with Gordon that in order to be a C.O. you must strongly believe that the war is unjust. Believes that you must have specific evidence of why you think the war is unjust, because if you do not have this then people will try to become C.O. s purely out of the fact that they are scared and this should not be allowed.

He found Gordon's points very interesting and believes that people should not have to kill if they do not want to.
- CZHN 9/12797 Critique : Michael Mandiz - Response to talk by Gordon 1987/1016
Believes that what Gordon has done is very courageous, but does not agree with his C.O. status during World War II. He says that Gordon stipulated that there are no good reasons to fight, but he thinks that in fact there are many good reasons why we should fight. He believed that Gordon came off as repetitive and did not seem very excited with what he was talking about.
- CZHN 9/12779 Critique : Mickey Schmidt - Response to talk by Gordon 1987/1016
Having much difficulty following Gordon he concludes that it is not right to hit someone because they hit you and so finds it immoral for one to fight in a war they know nothing about.
- CZHN 9/12774 Critique : Patrick Lanning - Response to talk by Gordon 1987/1016
He disagrees with some of Gordon's statements. He states he would not like to join the army but if drafted would go. He asks what COs have to do when drafted and mentions his disbelief that some parents disowned their sons for being COs.
- CZHN 9/12801 Critique : Ricky Caldwell - Response to talk by Gordon 1987/1016
Really enjoyed Gordon's talk. Said it taught him a lot of consequences of the draft and a lot of benefits that are taken away from you as a citizen if you do not register for the draft. Enjoyed his discussion of C.O. and how the Catholic Church did not agree with it in the 1940s, but now does. Says, that C.O. became a big deal with the Vietnam War.
- CZHN 9/12775 Critique : Ricky Ray - Response to talk of Gordon's 1987/1016
He respects Gordon's opinion; he is amazed that some people can believe in something so much that they would allow their lives to be taken, as was the case for some early COs Gordon mentioned.
- CZHN 9/12787 Critique : Rob Carrico - Response to talk by Gordon 1987/1016
He says that Gordon seemed very sincere and dedicated and had his respect. Believes that it takes as much courage to say that you will not fight in the war as it does to say that you will. He does not know yet what he will do when the time comes, but says he is not too worried because he does not think the United States will be reinstating the draft any time soon.
- CZHN 9/12792 Critique : Rodney Mayer - Response to talk by Gordon 1987/1016
He says that Gordon was highly opinionated and that he disagreed with much of what he said. He disagreed with Gordon's opinion that all wars are unjust and thus not worth fighting. Although the United States involvement in Vietnam was questionable, their involvement in WWII was completely justified.
- CZHN 9/12786 Critique : Steve Spears - Response to talk by Gordon 1987/1016
Found the talk interesting and agreed with Gordon that war is wrong. However, he does not believe that the draft is wrong. If he is drafted he will proudly serve his country.
