17 Sorin claimed to have written to Moreau about the expedition in March, 1850, but the letter seems never to have reached its destination. Father Moreau learned of the venture through Father Verité, then in Canada, at a much later date. In a letter to Father Cointet, Sept. 17, 1850, Father Moreau says that after hearing Sorin's reasons fir sending the expedition, he no longer condemns Sorin's intentions; but, as he stated later to Father Granger, October 29, 1851, he had never given his approval of the expedition.
