Farewell to Charles de Gaulle (1890-1970)

Charles de Gaulle died as he had lived - in lonely greatness that is awe-inspiring. He was the last prominent figure of World War II. He ruled France and held Europe in his spell. Will Gaullism as a political movement live on?

November 13, 1970

Charles de Gaulle gave the world at his death a gesture of reconciliation. At the official ceremony and the requiem in the Cathedral of Notre Dame heads of state from all continents and nations had assembled, who otherwise appeared to be separated by insurmountable differences. For a moment the world gave the impression of being one family. De Gaulle was buried in a pronounced unassuming way in his hometown of Colombey-Les-Deux-Eglises.
