The space shuttle Columbia was sent this morning on its third mission. There was a smooth start, the giant rocket lifted off from the launch pad on Cape Canaveral with such ease, one had the impression that manned space flights have already become a matter of routine.

Elections in El Salvador
Never before have elections in Central America drawn such attention as today’s elections for a constituent assembly in El Salvador. The first news and pictures, which have come out from the capital San Salvador, indicate that people, despite intimidations from the left and the right, are going to vote in large numbers and are standing in line before polling stations.

It was a desperate struggle for democracy. People in El Salvador, although they stood in the crossfire between government troops and the guerillas who wanted to prevent the election, cast their ballots without letting themselves to be deterred. The American team of election observers confirmed by common consent that the election was fair. The population of El Salvador wanted to have an end to the civil war, which over two years had claimed 30,000 victims.
