A Rare Glimpse Inside

For the opening celebrations of the Martin Luther Year in the DDR or East Germany, a Solemn Protestant Service, held today on the Wartburg at Eisenach in Thuringia, was broadcast on television that could be seen in the West. It offered a rare glimpse inside a world which has completely vanished from our consciousness. The first pictures of the Wartburg, this towering, medieval fortress, which we only know from Wagner’s Tannhäuser and Luther’s translation of the Bible, brought back into memory an almost forgotten sense of history. Surprising was the throng of people to this Service. What do their serious, grave looking faces, we may ask, want to tell us?

Firmly Resolved

At the recent G-7 summit meeting in Williamsburg, Virginia, the seven leading industrial nations have proved to be firmly resolved. No doubt was left about NATO’s resolution to update its nuclear force in Europe, should the disarmament conference in Geneva not lead to any result.
