Almost Forgotten
Had I not lived for years in the United States, “The Fourth of July,” the celebration of Independence Day could have almost been forgotten. Little notice is taken of this American national holiday or of the Declaration of Independence abroad.
[As I had been asked by the University of Notre Dame to stay on for another year as director of the foreign study program in Innsbruck, my wife and I used the summer vacation for a short return to the United States. It gave us the opportunity to look after our house in South Bend. Our son visited us there from California, and together we drove across the Midwest to visit with our daughter and son-in-law at Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri, where our son-in-law had begun his law practice.]
