Change on the U.S. Supreme Court

As Chief Justice Warren E. Burger, at the age of 78, is retiring, the highest judicial office of the nation has to be filled anew. President Reagan has nominated a member of the Supreme Court, Justice William H. Rehnquist, to succeed Burger as Chief Justice. To fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court created by the departure of Warren Burger, President Reagan nominated Antonin Scalia from Chicago. Both nominees are expected to be confirmed by the Senate. Thus, through the Supreme Court, Reagan’s hand may still be felt in the 21st century.

[For the confirmation hearings of William H. Rehnquist before the Senate Judiciary Committee, see entry of August 10, 1986, below.]

A New Idea for a Railroad Station

In Indianapolis as well as in St. Louis, the Union Station, the large central railroad station of the city, has been redesigned as an amusement park and bazaar in order to save the building from the wrecking ball. Passenger traffic was suspended long ago. The visitor gets the impression as if railroads were of a time long past. In museums of science and industry railroad cars are shown to children as special attractions. In this regard, there is a big difference to Europe where railroad stations still serve their intended purpose.
