CHATTANOOGA & THE VALLEY OF THE
TENNESSEE RIVER FROM LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN,
SHOWING THE NOSE OF THE MOUNTAIN
1864
Barnard was familiar with mid-nineteenth century landscape
paintings, as this composition suggests. Notice as you pass
through the exhibit how often Barnard posed solitary figures
gazing off into the distance. These individuals represent us, the
viewers, as we also gaze on the scene.
