1864

Knoxville, Tennessee was an important junction on the railroad connecting Virginia with the central South. Confederate General Longstreet attacked Union forces dug in here on November 29, 1863 and sustained high casualties. He withdrew, and for the rest of the war eastern Tennessee was under Union control. The elegant building on the far hillside to the left of center became the University of Tennessee.
