FORT ON BRICKHEAD ROAD This image features two of Barnard's favorite subjects: a figure gazing off into the distance and a solitary tree. He often used trees as compositional devices, breaking the horizon line and uniting the ground with the sky. They sometimes appear as symbols of destruction, especially when they or their shadows are broken or appear lifeless.
