Night comes and sets thy beacon in the skies
A woman starry-crowned, with starry eyes,
That watch forever with a solace meet,
Above the glittering moon beneath her feet.

-- Notre Dame Scholastic, 48:601 (26 June 1915).

When this school, Our Lady's school, grows a bit more, I shall raise her aloft so that, without asking, all men shall know why we have succeeded here. To that lovely lady, raised high on a dome, a Golden Dome, men may look and find the answer.

-- Edward Sorin, CSC, quoted by Thomas Schlereth,
A Dome of Learning (Notre Dame Alumni Association, 1991), p. 36.
