Online Exhibits > Civil War Photographs by George Barnard

POST OFFICE
Charleston SC
1865

A group of Yankee sailors lounge near the Exchange Building, which housed America's first independent government in 1773. It was used as a post office when this picture was taken. The little shop behind the sailors was a popular tavern before it became the French Coffee Shop.
