--------
1790 Jan. 12
Quinones, Estevan
New Orleans
On this day Bishop Cirilo of Barcelona declared that as the
fire of Mar. 21, 1788 destroyed baptismal records which would have
been saved had they been in a closet in the sacristy; in the future
the baptismal records are to be kept in such a closet and are not
to be removed from the sacristy without express permission of the
bishop. The parish priest and his assistants are to be informed by
the notary of this regulation.
Individual entries show that Quinones informed the following
priests on that same day: Fathers Xerez, Delgado, Luis Guignes,
(O.M.Cap.) and Olot.
In the sacristy of the parish church of St. Louis in the
city of New Orleans and in the presence of the undersigned the
books of marriages, deaths, and baptisms and dated from 1720 to
1790 were placed in a closet and locked with key, the assistants of
the parish remaining in charge of them.
