Chronicles of Notre Dame du Lac
Edward Sorin, CSC -- Translated by John M. Toohey, CSC, 1895
1861
pg 441 It would be hard to find anywhere else a series of letters
from the pen of a religious more disgusting than these; and yet,
strange as it may appear, his immediate superior, who could not
pretend ignorance of the facts, did not hesitate to write to F.
Sorin that in this matter Bro. Amedee had shown more delicacy than
might be imagined. Let us devote some lines to an analysis of the
             whole affair.
In the month of July 1860 Brother Amedee; secretary and
treasurer of Notre Dame, leaves his post by stealth, not letting
anyone know what money or other valuables he takes. In the month
of October following he hands F. Sorin 400 fr. without saying why
nor telling whence the money comes. In April 1861, the same
Brother meets F. Sorin in Philadelphia and shows himself to be
animated by the best spirit. On his return from Europe in May, F.
Sorin finds that this same Bro. Amedee is at work to bring Bro.
Charles Borromeo to Canada. The year before this Brother had been
promised to St. Laurent by France, but His Reverence afterwards
             gave him to F. Sorin.
