  He informs ALG, who is currently doing research in Germany, about his time at Notre Dame. He is having a wonderful time, taking courses and working hard on homeworks. He has accepted Mrs. Logue's invitation for an Independence Day Party at their home. And when he visited them last time had a chance to ride horses. He is planning to write a letter to Mr. and Mrs. Bedolfe asking them to inquire about Canadian Immigartion Regulations for him. Hungarian

  Ottó- László junior informs ALG about his decision not to return to Hungary. His plan is to fly either to England or to Toronto from Zurich, instead of back to Budapest. He needs ALG's help in obtaining the necessary paperwork for his emmigrant visa application. Since ALG has stood as a guarantor for him -- and for his return -- at the Hungarian Ministry of Interior (and this is the why he was essentially allowed to travel to America) he fears what if ALG will later come up against difficulties with the communist government. But despite this unfortunate outcome he is undeterred in his decision. Hungarian

Alternatively Mary proposes to meet in June in Yugoslavia again, reassuring ALG that her company would cover all expenses thus ALG should not worry about spending money. ALG's medical doctor friends from Budapest were not helpful with the admission to the Vet School. But he didn't help him out saying that there are "cutthroats" going on at the universities in order to get.   Ottó wants his illness to end soon since he can't get out of the house at all. Yet he won't lend himself to a spinal surgery because that is too dangerous. He is glad to hear that ALG is making plans to visit them this year. The best time would be around Christmas, should his plans come through. Meanwhile he pulled some strings and got the news that Ottó- László will enter the Veterinary School, for sure, even if his grades are not that spectacular. Hungarian

  Mary is happy to help ALG regarding the vineyard. After 30 years of nonchalance, she urges ALG to take action and sell his part of the estate that is now being rented out. Not long ago the tenant bought his brother's share. The 5/12 part of vineyard is still privately owned by ALG whereas the state handles it as abandoned property. Hungarian

  He finished his first year in college and now is preparing for the final exams. Above all, he was asked to give talks on various topics at his school that have had a great deal of success. The matter is full with unavailing endeavors from the part of the lawyer and he explains why he hired him in the first place making out his case. • CALG 14/32.01 Letter : Ottó to ALG 1948/1214
  Ottó uses a secret language to explain ALG his plans to leave the country. He pretends to write about somebody else, not him, when listing the countries where he could go. He thanks ALG for his help going to Canada, via Prága. The other option would be to just run across the border, to Bécs or another nearby city. But if he leaves, there will be no way back to Hungary soon, unless the authorities catch him back and bring him back, which is the nightmare scenario. Ottó asks ALG to send more information about the Canada plan, adding that this, and the other plans to flee the country, are very risky. He would immediately send an express letter to ALG when he arrives to his destination. When he visited the Norbertinum he took ALG's nice leather suitcase back with him and safeguards it for him.   He didn't make it all the way to Franci, because he stopped to pay a visit at the Köszegi family. Ottó has made up a name for himself, Pécsi Ottó, to explain to ALG, in coded language, his decision to ask for an emigrant visa to leave Hungary legally. It is too risky to escape Hungary through thr border. But ALG is concerned that the legal application process might take too long, and in addition there is a great chance that Ottó will be denied the visa. Ottó, however, is not a deserter. He wants to come back and visit Hungary any time he wants to. His passport/visa application is in quite good shape, anyway, and he is looking forward to join his brother soon. Hungarian

  Ottó gives detailed information about the documents he needs to attain for the application, such as the Hungarian translation of the affidavit of support that he has just received. ALG should send the money to Kati, Galgóczy Lászlóné, and not to him. Although he is poor, he is still under constant surveillance, because of ALG. Second, his qualification is finance law not emigration law. Nevertheless, he will be glad to draft an application letter for Ottó that he has to hand in to the authorities in Defence Ministry.   Ottó is sorry for not being able to join ALG in America to live with him. Much to his regret, he decided to stay in Hungary for good. The authorities had made emigration impossible by asking for certificates that he is not able to provide. Reunion with his brother was Ottó's reason for leaving the country. After their parents' death, he doesn't have close relatives in Hungary any more. But as soon as the officials noticed ALG's name on his application, they started to make the whole process very difficult. There are some self-affairs regarding him and also ALG that he can't list in this letter since it will surely be opened and read by somebody. Also, it is an endeavour for him to sell all his assets in order to cover the ever increasing expenses, only to find out later that his application will be denied. Recently he came across a letter that ALG had written to his father when he was ill in the army hospital. Reading it, Ottó was reassured that ALG's limitless and unconditional love for his father is a merit that needs no further comment. Hungarian

  She begs pardon for sending the book review so late. In the last couple of months she kept coming back to ALG's book, regularly turning over the pages. The work is doing a service not only to the manhandled Hungarian pride but also to European publicity. She kindly asks ALG to go over the review and send his corrections back to her so they can proceed with publishing. She thanks ALG for his effort to send his books and monographs to various Hungarian libraries. Above all the University of Paris Hungarian collection is exclusively due to ALG's hard work and great effort. Surely ALG loves his homeland very much.   ALG is very sad to note that the Hungarian language newspaper, Életünk, appearing in München, Germany, has not at all mentioned his recently published book. The work has immense pertinence to Hungarian cultural life. Although he has informed the paper several times of the book, which was published a year ago, they have not even mentioned it in their column "One Sentence". The book deals with many aspects of Hungarian culture, such as prominent Hungarians at the University of Paris or Transylvania between 1495-1525. ALG suspects that it is something personal going on as articles of this sort regularly appear in their paper. Thus ALG has not paid a visit to the paper's editor when visiting the city three times last year. Hungarian

  ALG sends the Diocesan Bishop of Pécs, Dr. Cserháti, a copy of his new book about Hungarian students and professors at the University of Paris. The article is about Mattheus de Loreyo's years in Paris and his ties to the Hungarian humanists. ALG's book about the University of Paris is coming out in October on the occasion of the Frankfurt am Main Bookfair. ALG has great news about Gábor, Tibor's son: He has made a hit in America since he is a great lecturer and a learned scholar. ALG informs Prof. Klaniczay about his plans to lecture at several European conferences and congratulates Tibor on his academic achievements. Hungarian
