Catholic "Separatism" and Anti-Catholic Tensions ~ 4-page article in America written after studying 4,000 letters written to Paul Blanshard following the publication of his book, American Freedom and Catholic Power (1949). ~ Zahn writes in response to separatist allegations made on the part of protestants. He contends that Catholics must be separatist in their behavior if they are to adhere to the formal teachings of the Church, rather than to what is considered "normal." He also says that this separatism stirs anti-Catholic tensions due to misunderstandings, irrational fears, suspicions, and resentments held by enemies of the Church. Any attempt to reduce tensions by modifying behavior prescribed by teachings of the Church would be a denial of faith, however there is no need to give substance to the irrational fears by supporting unnecessary separatist influences within the Catholic Church. ~ America ~ 94-98
