Yes, by Clemens ~ This letter identifies the various peace organizations and publications that would be useful to Dr. Zahn. The FDK which translates to "Alliance for Peace of German Catholics" was founded in 1919 by Dr. Metzger who was a chaplain for the army. Journals published included: "Warrior for Peace" and the "Peace Herald." The membership of FDK was around 40,000 men.

Mentions that after the war the Berlin group sought to reassert itself under new leadership, but eventually incorporated itself into Pax Christi. She feels that the clergy and the hierarchy failed in its responsibility by not opposing to WWII. Also, discussed Brudy Marcus who was executed for refusing to wear sidearms.

Met with the editor of the German Catholic pacifist magazine and now the Vice President of Pax Christi, Alfons Erb. Erb disappointed by the Pope's Christmas message. He also says that he is much disturbed over the lack of attention given to wartime pacifist martyrdom. In addition, says that at first Hitler made quite a play for Church support, making a distinct pretense of friendship, and by so doing won many people over. It was not until later that he showed his real intentions toward Catholicism in Germany.

Met with Mr. Sletilen who gave him good summaries of the Paulus - Maurus cases and gave him some suggestions for informants. Sletilen said that in the beginning Maurus was assigned medieval corps work and consequently had no serious objection. However, later in the war Hitler decided that all men be trained in the use of weapons and Maurus objected, but still went through with the training and he was very good so he was ordered into infantry.

Met with a Dr. Karl Farber who was recommended by Franz Mueller. Farber knew of Metzger and another priest who had defied the Nazis openly on the war question and was later executed. Farber is the editor of a Sunday diocesan paper. He mentions that he regards Grober as one of the strongest Nazi opponents.

Met with Dr. Joseph Knecht, who identified himself as the founder of the FDK and said that the FDK's publishing house was in Frankfurt. Dr. Knecht also said that on July 1, 1933, by order of the Nazis, the FDK was dissolved and several of its leaders were arrested. This was because the FDK was judged as an enemy of the state and all of their records were taken by the Gestapo, so they had no materials by which to defend themselves.

Gordon had a meeting with Hanz Wirtz and Fredrich Ferber. Their discussion focused on Franz Mueller. Both remembered Franz Mueller and spoke of the tough time he had in the U.S. shortly after emigration because in the heat of a student meeting he had enrolled in the Nazi party. Also, both Wirtz and Ferber expressed fear and a deep antagonism toward America in that Germans hold America responsible for the loss of the war and the destruction of their cities. In addition to these topics, the group discussed the FDK.

Met with Josef Flerchies who wants to emigrate to Australia. There are numerous rumors about Mr. Flerchies' mental stablility. When Mr. Flerchies refused to take part in the war he had no support from his family, especially his father who was a soldier. After the war he founded and was president of a society of persons who suffered under Hitler during the war. But he withdrew from this position and is now the founder of the International Group of Catholics who work against war.

Gordon made a visit to Walter Ferber who knew little of the developments in Germany under Hitler because right after Hitler's ascencion to power, Ferber went to Austria. Gordon also visited with Charles Frochlicher who was stricken with polio only 15 months prior. Gordon speculated from what little conversation he had with Frochlicher that he is a pacifist, but also a veteran.

Did not get to see Christa Thomas because of conflicting schedules, but did get to meet with Pastor Bechers who gave some details of his life during the war. Pastor Bechers said that he was expelled from several religious assignments and parishes and eventually reached a point where he thought there would be no place to escape the Nazi orders so he gave some thought to escaping to Switzerland, but he realized that Hitler would inevitably find him and he would be executed. Suggests to Gordon that he raise his questions to the Pope.

Met with Dr. Hans Bauer, who had been the secretary of Vitus Heller, a past publicist of Wuerzburg. Bauer gave Gordon a summary of Heller's personal history. Said that when Hitler came to power, Heller's job at the paper came to an end and he was sent to Dachau. Bauer also shared with Gordon revelations about himself and how he became a pacifist and the consequences it had for him during WWII. Also talked about the underground peace activities he took part in during WWII.

Talked with Professor Flukenstein who told Gordon that his position is one where he believes that in a situation where a defense is needed, the army is to accepted but only as a necessary evil. Later in the conversation Gordon asked him whether any theologian, other than Stratterman and a few others, had publicly declared since the war that it had been unjust and that Catholics should have refused to serve. He said he knew of none.

Meets with the Riktor who was late because he was attending the memorial mass marking the 13th anniversary of Wuerzburg's destruction. During their talk, the Riktor commented that the neutrality of the Vatican and the failure of the bishops must be looked at as a matter of saving the Church in Germany from the fate being suffered by the Jews.

Yes, by Clemens ~ Mr. Beckers was unable to be involved in the peace movement during the war because the Gestapo would come to listen to his preachings in church. He also makes mention of the "HJ" which was a para-military youth organization sponsored by Hitler that he majority of Young German men joined. He states that he could not join the peace movement because it conflicted with the interests of the "HJ." He also states that many Catholics were against the war, but could not speak out because they faced "terrible martyrdom." He recommends that Dr. Zahn talk to: Dr. Nikolaus Ehlen who wrote a book, "World Peace," and Constanze Hallgarten who wrote, "Living as a Female Pacifist in Germany." ~ Dusseldorf-Stockum

Met with Nicholas Ehler who created a new type of housing arrangement in Germany. Told Gordon that he had been "vacationed" from his job shortly after the Nazis came to power. Also told of his many close calls with Nazi authorities and how he successfully dealt with them. In addition, Ehler told Gordon of his conflicts with the Catholic Church after he expressed his belief that all Catholics must be COs.

Met with Dr. Mana Foubender who had been elected to a post of leadership in the FDK. Dr. Mana told Gordon of the FDK history, but gave him no new information. Also, told Gordon that at the beginning of Hitler's regime she applied for a teaching position and was told and was told she could have the job as soon as she resigned from the FDK. She refused and eventually got a job as head mistress at a private school. During the war, her peace work took on a more subtle form.

Met with Walter Derbus who is an editor and who is also linked with the Catholic pacifist thought of the day. He gave a summary of FDK history. With the draft under Hitler it was practically impossible to discuss or even consider CO status because a German who refused service would certainly be executed. Derbus was lucky to avoid the draft because of his age and health considerations. Derbus also commented that Catholics were half-hearted in their support of the war.

Said that when the Nazis were gaining power the Gestapo was particularly interested in finding the membership lists of the FDK, but they were destroyed, and once Hitler came to power the FDK collapsed. When Gordon asked both of them about the Jewish extermination camps they both insisted that they only knew of Dachau, Buchenwald, and Berlin Orlenberg. They also refuted the persecution of the clergy.
