Met with Dr. Holgapfil, the current editor of the Wuerzburg diocesan paper and also a priest. He brought with him some old copies of the paper from the wartime and Dr. Holgapfil told Gordon that during the war if a paper wanted to continue to be published the government ordered that they had a certain amount of "required content" that was patriotic to the Hitler Regime. In addition, Holgapfil gave examples of Gestapo action when publications did not comply with these rules.

Met with Dr. Neuchauser, the author of "Kreug and Hahenkreug" who was also an assitant to Faulhaber prior to his long detention at Dachau. Neuchauser gave Gordon a book written by a priest who had been in Dachau relating the experiences of clergy in the concentration camps. He said that the Nazi's succeeded in virtually dictating free communication between the members of the Catholic hierarchy meaning that all important messages were under Nazi observation.

Yes, by Clemens ~ Felix writes of the involvement and the state of the FDK (Alliance for Peace of German Catholics) during the war. Prof. Paulus Lenz-Mendoc tried to keep up the effort but it failed and he had to escape. Other organizations he mentioned that joined the FDK include: the Union of Catholic Men, Catholic Women Union, Quickborn Movement, Youth of Great Germany, Jungborn, Cross Union. He states that the issue of absolute conscientious objection of military service had never been incorporated into the program of the FDK.

Yes, by Clemens ~ He has been fighting and writing against the Catholic Church's policy. He is considered a betrayer of the Catholic Church's policy. He makes mention of Bishop Franz Jowskij letters and role during the war. He was the military bishop and urged Catholics to actively create the Third Reich. He also warns that all of the documents disappeared and that the contemporary attitude of the church is to conceal everything. Met with Fr. Gundlach, who Gordon suspected might be responsible for the CO section of the Pope's Christmas message. He was not pleased when Gordon was describing to him the basis of his research. During their talk Gordon notes that two things became evident. The first was that Gundlach was not prepared to admit that the German Church leadership had done anything wrong and the second was that he would limit any attempt of Gordon's research by adding conditions that would make it impossible for him to continue. They also discusses his contradictory remarks about the Catholic Church, pacifism, and the Papal Christmas message.

Met with Sr. Gertrude for the second time. Again Gordon was impressed by her total devotion to the memory of Dr. Metzger. They discussed at length the case of Brother Maurus and his connections to Brother Michael who was also executed. Then they discussed Brother Paulus and the famous letter written to Hitler by Metzger. Sr. Gertrude also noted her belief that the Nazi leadership and its domination of Germany was a form of demonic possession.

German Pacifists ~ 1 and 1/2 page article in America concerning the debate about Catholic pacifism in Germany. ~ Zahn briefly comments on the history of the pacifist movement in Germany, and then addresses the controversy in Germany that ensued after the Christmas Message from the Pope in 1956 that advocated war in the situation of self-defense, saying it could not be considered unlawful. Zahn explains both the radical and moderate pacifist positions and claims that the controversy obscures a serious theological question concerning the inviolability of individual conscience. A letter to the Hollanders. ~ Zahn writes about Susie's Confirmation and wants to know how it went, who came, what gifts she received, how the party afterwards was, etc. He also discusses problems with packages that he has had sent home and tells a funny story about a singer at an amateur performance. The singer received some flowers from a member of the audience, and when the singer bowed the audience could see that there was a bottle of alcohol in the bouquet. Zahn thought that this was very funny.

Met with Dr. Schoellgen, an active anti-pacifist who emphasized the importance of correctly evaluating the situation and placed a specific emphasis on the historical factors in Gordon's research. Then Dr. Schoellgen went into detail about some of the central factors that he thinks Zahn should explore. Gordon also brought up the treatment of the Jews during the war and Schoellgen denied haveing any knowledge of it. In addition, the he asserted that the Catholic Church supported Hitler purely out of fear of a communist takeover.
