He adds that the book should hold particular interest for all Catholics in light of decisions reached by the Vatican Council.

His principal objection is to those who merely go along with whatever is being done and are not concerned about its implications.

If the money came from school funds, he suggests they send the money to the Franz Jaegerstaetter Foundation.

A letter to Bishop Wright. ~ Gordon is afraid that Wright has interpreted Gordon's letter as a suggestion to attack O'Brien openly. Gordon says that he is in the "funny position" of agreeing with the rationale behind O'Brien's position (that a modern war fought according to the rules of a just war would lead to certain defeat.) Gordon says his appeal to Wright was more in the nature of an open re-affirmation of the fact that the old rules still hold and must be obeyed.

Gordon says that the conscientious objector to a particular war does refuse to "bear all arms" in a war he is convinced is unjust: that is, he refuses to accept any form of military service in such a war.

Letter to Gordon from Iwao Munakata who is a Professor of Sociology and the Director of the Department of Sociology at Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan. ~ He found Gordon's comments on "The Test of the Just War" at the "Washington Conference on Peace" very interesting and is organizing a group of Japanese scholars "interested in peace research, on the basis of non-partisan attitude." Mr. Munakata is very interested in the peace issue from a Catholic point of view. As soon as he receives "IN SOLITARY WITNESS" and has a chance to read it, he will introduce Gordon to a Japanese publisher. McCarthy explains that the US government provides ocean freight for all shipments of the voluntary agencies on the condition that when the freight is paid to a specific country, the goods stay in that country. This rule came into play when there was a problem in Algeria several years ago.

Mosse ~ Zahn gives a semi-favorable review, pointing out the shortcomings and omissions of NAZI CULTURE while also pointing out that it serves as a good starting point for an exploration of cultural systems.
