He says that non-violence was not one of Maritain's primary concerns, if at all, and he finds it troubling that Maritain did not take seriously non-violence as a way of resisting oppressive regimes. Gordon says that his own personal position is closer to Merton's and he discusses Merton's commitment to non-violence as a position that must be taken despite the consequences.

Frederick (3/24) asks Gordon to prepare a statement for publication about the moral and ethical implications of conscription. Alice writes to Gordon (4/22/80) thanking him for his willingness to participate, outlining the publication plan, and giving the deadline. Gordon's statement "Comments on The Moral and Ethical Implicaitons of Conscription and National Service" is attached. Gordon asserts that conscription increases the likelihood for war and argues that conventional war is morally wrong and can never be just. He points out that conscription depersonalizes individuals and forces them into a situation of war. He also says that forced servitude is forbidden under the Constitution, and that individuals who are forced into the military will not be able to develop their moral judgement.

Book reviews of Vatican Diplomacy and the Jews During the Holocaust by John Morely and of By Words Alone: The Holocaust in Literature by Sidra DeKoven Ezrahi in WORLDVIEW. ~ Gordon reviews Morely's book as a factual account of the Vatican's relations with countries that came under Nazi rule during WWII. He says that the style basically is an organization of research, but that it is an effective use of understatement and it gets the point across that the church did not act as it could or should have to help save more Jews from extermination. Ezrahi's book is an analysis of literature that deals with the Holocaust, and Gordon says that it suffers from too much abstraction but it is valuable in contributing a fuller awareness of the lessons of the Holocaust. ~ Worldview ~ 25-27 ~ September

Gordon's 11-page article responds to Carter's decision that the Selective Service can again register young Americans, and makes the point that Crhristians and Catholics should consider what they and their church can to do stop the accelerating drift toward war. He discusses several statements that the church has issued in the past, and puts forth several arguments against the morality and judgement of having peacetime conscription.
