Professor Norbert Greinacher ~ University of Toebingen in Germany ~ Correspondence between Gordon and Norbert; an essay is attached. ~ 3/30 and 5/12 -- Letters are written to Gordon from Norbert in German. Documents are attached describing the theme and editorial ideas for the 1983 International Review of Theology, entitled "Concilium." 6/5 -- Gordon apologizes for his delay of response and says that he is willing to do an article on the "absolute pacifist position" although he is not sure if he is the best person for it. 6/15 -- Norbert sends Gordon another letter in German. 7/7 -- Gordon receives a letter with more information and a deadline for the article for "Concilium." 8/13 -- Gordon writes saying that he is enclosing the manuscript. In his essay, Gordon recounts the early pacifist days of Christianity and the historical changes that took place whereby the Church became more militant. He links this to the development of modern war and says that war can no longer be reconciled in the Church because there can be no just war in modern times.

"Monasticism and Peace" ~ 15-page essay written by Gordon along with some correspondence between Gordon and the sisters of BENEDICTINES. ~ 7/21--The editor of BENEDICTINES writes to ask Gordon to write an article entitled "Monasticism and Peacemaking." 8/16--Gordon responds that he is busy, but he will do it. 9/15--Gordon sends a brief note along with the essay. Gordon begins his essay talking about his misconceptions of the moanstic life, and then turns his discussion to monastic involvement in the peace movement. He asserts that it is imperative that the spiritual duties of any religious order include a contribution toward peace. He points out many occasions where religious orders promote military activities such as the ROTC, as says that steps need to be taken to eliminate military associations. All monastic communities, along with the Catholic Church, must remind Christians that they must work for peace and reject war. He contends that Churchmen should publicly protest war in their religious attire whenever possible for visibility and affirmation of the Catholic pacifist position.

A letter to "sister" is attached talking about who should be the Pax Christi representative for the NISBCO conference along with Gordon. ~ Gordon discusses the escalation of the arms race and makes some recommendations of programs of action and specific arguments that Pax Christi should advance. (1) Pax Christi should emphasize the evils of nuclear war and how it is incompatable with Christian teachings. (2) Pax Christi should cooperate with other peace organizations, but not at the expense of its credibility. (3) He recommends that Pax Christi make disarmament be the primary issue of the 1982 Assembly and that a primarily educational approach should be supplemented with an activist approach as well. (4) He says that Pax Christi chapters need to become more active on the regional and community levels.
