Information for Researchers
University offices wishing to transfer records to the Archives should follow the instructions here.
The University Archives' reading room is open weekdays from 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. We highly recommend that if you are planning to visit the Archives in person, you contact us ahead of time. Many of the collections are kept off site and it may take a day or two to retrieve them and bring them to campus. All researchers are encouraged to read the Archives' policies, which will help you understand what materials you will have access to and how to best conduct your research. If you are unable to visit the Archives in person, it is helpful to contact us via email if you have any questions about how to search the collections and to receive instructions on how to order reproductions of records.
The Archives' reading room contains general publications relating to Notre Dame such as the bulletins of study, yearbook, student newspaper and magazine, and the alumni magazine. In addition, the reading room houses reference material pertinent to the history of the Catholic Church such as a complete run of the Official Catholic Directory and some editions of the Catholic Almanacs and Catholic encyclopedias. Finding aids not available online are also available in the reading room. All other material, including University records, manuscript collections, and photograph, audio/visual, and microfilm collections, are housed in closed stacks and therefore must be requested via a call slip and retrieved by Archives' staff.
If you will be visiting the Archives, the University's website provides a campus map and additional information. Parking near the Hesburgh Library is limited; there is a small visitor lot located northeast of the library building.
