Salzburg During and After the Festival

During the time of the Festival from mid-July to the end of August, Salzburg radiates a splendor like nowhere else in the world. The picturesque baroque city, which Max Reinhardt had turned into a single stage, gives the Festival a unique ambience. Outstanding artistic achievements and an international Festival audience make Salzburg in the summer the center of the arts in Europe. But when the Festival is over, Salzburg falls back again into the sleepy provincial town it has been since the end of the reign of the prince archbishops by the end of the 18th century. After the Festival, what is still offered on the stage and in music halls is not different from the other provincial capitals in Austria.
