Free Elections in Moscow
News from Moscow on elections are such a rarity that announcing the results of yesterday’s elections made headlines worldwide. Boris Yeltsin, who stood up against the orthodox party line, won 89% of the votes for the seat of Moscow in the Supreme Soviet. Those were the first free elections within the Communist regime since 1917. They are an indication that Glasnost works and that the road to more democracy, once taken, cannot be reversed.
