Charles IV, King of Spain
Aranjuez, Spain

to Bishop (Luis Penalver y Cardenas)
(New Orleans), Louisiana

In a letter of May 31, 1799 the Acting Intendant of the Province brought to the attention of the king that he should assign the 7000 pesos of the pious foundation of the Count of Galvez to enable the Ursulines to pay the cost of the major part of the building to house their students, something they could never do because of their small income. The Intendant was convinced that the money which the nuns asked for should really belong to the royal funds since the little wooden houses built by Galvez no longer exist and the ground is occupied by those built by the king's royal patrimony which could bring a rental of 111 pesos a month, that it was wholly irregular for the governor to constitute himself administrator of this income. The king orders that he be informed through the undersigned secretary, Porcel.
