O'Connor, John
New Feliciana, (Louisiana)

to Father Thomas Hassett
New Orleans, (Louisiana)

Father (Patrick) Lonergan, (O.F.M.) arrived from Baton Rouge a month or five weeks ago and remained about a week waiting for passage to the Red River. He had been sick a few days, considered himself better, and proceeded but was taken violently ill and was obliged to remain at Mrs. Welton's house, five miles from there, attended by Dr. Crocker. Last Sunday O'Connor went to see him and sent for Dr. Flower. It is uncertain when Lonergan can proceed. All were so pleased with his doctrine that O'Connor is of the opinion that a few sermons more would convert most of the old people. O'Connor requests that Hassett will consider if he can employ him better than there. The bearer, Robert Sproul, goes to New Orleans to establish himself in business there. Hassett's friendship, together with that of their mutual friend, Father (Patricio Walsh), would be esteemed exceedingly.

A.L.S.

Folded with this:

(1802) (Oct.)

Hassett, Father T(homa)s
(New Orleans, Louisiana)

to John O'Connor
(Bayou Sarah, Louisiana)

It mortifies Hassett that he cannot accede at present to the request that Lonergan be permitted to remain as their pastor. The district already assigned to Lonergan is very extensive and contains more souls than Bayou Sarah. Should anyone present himself capable of serving the former parish, Hassett will cheerfully accede to their demands.
