- CALG 5/03.06 Letter : ALG to Prof. Joseph Holub 1959/1023
ALG thanks Joseph for his letter informing him about the new Hilduin-material. As soon as it is published ALG will order an imprint. ALG would also like to order a copy of Joseph's new studies since the Medieval Library owns only his Carmina. The studies should be in either French, German, or Italian as few people know Hungarian here. Unfortunately ALG lost contact with Pécs none the less that he worked in the Episcopial Library there when he was 13 years old. Hungarian

Since Zolnai's book at the publisher in Hungary was out of print, ALG requests a copy from him. ALG sends information about common friends, such as Tini and Schwarcz Elemér. He thinks that life in Luxemburg suits Zolnai well. ALG invites Prof. Zolnai to Stockholm. Michael Francis is ALG's good friend there. The Hungarian Academy just announced the number of scholars to be nomitad (27) without their names. ALG hopes Zolnai is one of them. Two of ALG's studies are on the way to the university library. ALG is glad to hear about George's new article that mentions the discovery of the three "corvinas". ALG himself wrote a study on one, namely the original text from the Vatican, but he has not finished it. It is the Latin version of the Arrian that was prepared by Paulo Vergerio to the Hungarian King Zsigmond. Hungarian

Pater Bonifacius Luyckx told Ferenc to contact ALG and to request help. Ferenc sends information concerning his move to Belgium in 1956 including his profile. Now he lost his job but would like to continue working in his field (law) to be able to support his family. He would be obliged if ALG would help and advice him what to do. As a graduate of benedictine, Ferenc knows the Premontré Order from Jászó and Csorna, Hungary, very well. Hungarian

Zoltán thanks ALG for recommending his son, Géza, for admission and scholarship to Notre Dame. He has asked Eckhart Tibor to talk to ALG concerning admission. His family escaped Hungary to provide a decent education for their children. In Hungary they would have been denied admission to the university. Zoltán is especially glad that his son will attend Notre Dame because he will be educated in a Catholic spirit, next to ALG, which is a chance that the Hungarian red atheism did not offer. Hungarian

György invites ALG to visit Fort Wayne on the occasion of the Polony Elemér's exhibition at the Art Museum. He also inquires about information concerning a possible exhibit in South Bend or at Notre Dame. György and Elemér were classmates in high-school. Charles Sheedy forwarded to ALG Miklós letter. ALG is glad to help him concerning the book order. Pista thanks ALG for his December 12th letter. He reminds ALG when they walked the streets of Paris together so much that ALG almost foundered. He asks ALG to send school-atlases and geographical magazines. Pista sends information about new trends in Budapest, Hungary, such as the renovation of the lightning of public spaces, in fashion, eating, construction, intellectual life, publishing, and the appearance of snack bars and caffees. ALG is glad to correspond again with his former teacher, Elemér, after such a long time. Recently ALG has collected all Elemér's works in the Medieval Institute Library and therefore he frequently reads them. ALG's collection of books on the history of universities is unique in the United States that includes many important Hungarian material as well. ALG will send the money to the Archives of the Vatican soon. However it might not get there on time. ALG sends information concerning his current research dealing with the Chartularium, Traguriai Mihály, and Martinus de Bereck. He inquires about the Görgő family and sends his regards to Elemér's wife. If it's not inconvenient to his professor then ALG sends his regards to everybody from his Alma Mater. Hungarian

Per ALG's request, Elemér is sending by airmail the two books to Notre Dame. The invoice is attached to the package. Elemér requests ALG to remit payment, in dollars, to Pásztor Lajos, Litta del Vaticano, Archivio Segreto, who will give the money to Elemér afterwords. If he gets the approval for the extension from Budapest, Hungary, Elemér will stay in Rome until December. He thanks ALG for his help in the augmentation. But he asks ALG not to mention the matter in the letters he will send later to Hungary. The material Elemér plans to research in the Vatican Archives and Library is extensive. Hungarian

Although he writes rarely to ALG, Elemér is sorry to write about business instead of research on such rare occasion. Now he is in Rome attending a conference. He brought two books with him from Hungary. One is Danko's Vetus hymnarium and the other is the Ábel series. The former is a rare original copy from his own collection while the latter is stamped with seals of Széchy Károly and the public school. Elemér sets a high value on the Dankó master print. Together with Pásztor Lajos they appraised the value to be $120 and $30, respectively, and asks ALG if he would be interested in buying them. He requests ALG's confidentiality in this matter when sending letters to Hungary. He plans to visit Vienna, Austria, in the summer and hopes to see ALG there. Hungarian

Miklós thanks ALG for his prompt reply and also for his order. From Vienna Miklós sent the package with the 1955-56 issues of the Hungarian Archives in it. He requests ALG to pay $8.50 to Rev. Alexander Németh, living in Vienna, for these two volumes. Although it is difficult to buy old books Miklós will try his best to acquire some for ALG. Hungarian

Miklós mailed the two volumes of the Hungarian Archives to ALG. He is glad that ALG purchased them since it relieved some of Miklós' money worries too. He wrote to many old friends but nobody replied but ALG. He asks ALG to write a letter soon to Vienna and to share his opinion about their collateral behaviour in this sad period that follows the overthrow of the 1956 revolution. Miklós has been doing research in the Vienna Public Archives for two weeks. Should ALG remember him, he is to reply by return of post to the Vienna address provided (to Prof. Franz Deéd) without mentioning Miklós' name. He asks ALG not to talk about this correspondence to any Hungarian. There were many cases of "reliable" immigrants informing the AVO (Hungarian Secret Service) about Hungarians in the West corresponding with people living in Hungary. These people ended up in jail in Hungary. Benda Marci sends the message and asks if ALG is in need of books. Marci could send everything out from the country to him. Miklós informs ALG about the arrangements to remit payment afterwards. Now Miklós has two volumes of the series Hungarian Archives with him in Vienna. He would appreciate it if ALG would buy them since he has money worries. He inquires about ALG's opinion regarding the situation of the Hungarians who stayed in Hungary after the revolution. Iván and his wife intend to leave Hungary and emigrate to the United States. He would be obliged if ALG, as his old friend, would procure a legal invitation for them and would inquire about teaching positions in academia. Iván informs ALG about his qualifications and work experience. In Hungary, there is a new law that allows citizens over 45 to leave the country. Endre wishes good health to ALG for his upcoming birthday. He received both the V. de Beauvais study and the Mickiewicz volume, whereof he will soon write a criticism in German. He sends his regards to Ivan Mesterovic, the great Croatian sculptor, who lives and works in South Bend. Although he specialized in Slavic Baroque, in the fall Endre will teach a course on Medieval Literary History at the University of Debrecen. Prof. Mezey told László that ALG asked for the microfilm of the Nyirkálló-codicies. He informs ALG that Kumorovitz Bernát has worked on the same subject for over a year now. If ALG sends some of his other writings, László will publish it in the Bibliotheca series that he edits and publishes under the auspicies of the Hungarian Academy. Per ALG's request Gábor inquired about information concerning the order of the antiquated books, microfilming the codicies, and the codicies-catalogues. ALG is to order the books directly from the Cultura Bookstore Co. as private individuals are prohibited to send books abroad. ALG needs to officially order the microfilms through the Széchényi Public Library. But Gábor will cover the costs and will follow with attention the order so it doesn't get lost. Hungarian

The French government would match the funds for a westernized rest center for the Hungarian university students if they would raise the rest of the money. Gyula is a refugee of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and currently lives in Los Angeles. He works in a grind-plant but would like to find an intellectually challenging job. As a former student of the Premontre Order, having a Law degree, Gyula appeals to ALG to advise him in this matter. Gyula heard it from Prof. Kumorovitz and Prof. Oszwald that the Premontre Order at Gödöllő has recently been burglarized and liquidated. The life of its graduates in Hungary thereafter was very difficult. Gyula, too, among others, was sent to the Siberian lager after WWII. Hungarian

Gábor informs ALG about the great difficulties he has been through in Hungary, including the notorious extermination camp at Recsk. He fled the country in November 1956. Now he lives and works in Hamburg, Germany, but wishes to emigrate to the United States. He requests ALG to get him in contact with people in Washington who might help him get a visa. Gábor heard that people immigrate to the U.S. through the Private Bill. He was surprised that the Free Europe Committee refused his services when he wanted to work for them as the Hungarian economic expert correspondent. Two years ago Gábor attended the 1955 Class Reunion at Gödöllő and is sorry to note that their former Premontre School and its monastic quarters has been devastated so much that it was unrecognizable. Having left Hungary after the 1956 war of independence, Katalin starts a new life in New York. Her professors at the University of Budapest, ALG's Alma Mater, were still teaching her in 1949, but were all fired for political reasons in 1950. Prof. Kumorovitz, ALG's confrere and housemate in Budapest, tought her the science of print and sealing in the School of Archives. She asks ALG to let her know about the various opportunities, if any, where she might get a job. She has been a teacher and an archivist back in Hungary, however she refused time and time again to collaborate with the communists in teaching and research. She was degraded in her job because of this. Katalin and her family are ready to move wherever she could find a challenging job opportunity. Hungarian

ALthough he left the St. Michael's College at the end of April, he was able to receive ALG's kind note. He is glad that ALG is solicitous about his fortune in the United States. Andrew reminds ALG of the times when in Hungary they both took the train from Gödöllő to Pécs to visited their parents. Because of his involvement in the 1956 revolution he suddenly had to leave Hungary without even saying goodby to his parents. Now he, together with hundred other fellow countrymen, are in the United States studying English. Andrew wonders if ALG would help him to get admission to Notre Dame in the Department of Art History. Lajos thanks ALG for his kind words and his effort to help him. Since they cannot leave the camp in Yugoslavia, he couldn't go to the Canadians. Last month he received the ticket to Detroit, U.S., but he is not allowed to travel because he doesn't have a visa. He tried to sign up to be a labourer in Belgium, however, due to an injury in his arm, he wasn't taken away. The whole situation is hopeless. Hungarian

Lajos is glad to note that he reached the land of free. After being beaten up with batons and confined in dark cells, he now is in Belgium. He was among the thirty lucky students chosen by the Belgian committee and taken to a priestly college in Visé. Lajos will probably be sent to study economics and international relations at the University of Louvain. He thanks ALG for encouraging him and helping his case when he was so unhopeful. Hungarian

József was a 15 year old student of ALG when the Russians occupied Gödöllo= in 1944 and he had to stop his studies. József is a graduate of the French College of the Canons of Premontre in Hungary.He tells the story of his life, mentioning 15 years spent in a Siberian lager. He was inflicted a punishment of 15 years in deathcamp for he was 15 then, but he was innocent. He is a refugee in the United States now and is studying English at Elmhurst College. The World University Services is making the arrangements for his stipened. He asks ALG to help him continue his studies after so many years. As a former student of ALG, Ferenc asks ALG to help him find a job in Canada. He is a 1956 refugee staying in a camp together with many other Hungarians. He is willing to work anything just to earn some money. Back then it was ALG who instilled the love for French literature in him. Irmus begs pardon for her delay in writing. She thanks ALG for the letter, but his son did not receive his. His son, Lajos, sends the message through her that he is not able to respond as he doesn't have the money for postage. She asks ALG to intervene at the US embassy in Belgrade for Lajos to be included in the first transport of refugees to the US. The president asked Congress to vote on a 1000 person quota.
