  ALG's former student, Dr. Domonkos László, informed him about Dr. Várkonyi's outstanding scholarly research. ALG looks forward to meet her late August or early September. ALG had to combine his trip to Hungary with another trip to Münich, Germany, due to the ease off of the dollar exchange rate. ALG intends to stay in the same hotel as before and Prof. Székely knows his contact information there. ALG sends information about IREX engagement. Hungarian

  ALG, as a senior scholar, intends to apply for IREX travel grant in order to reach out to his fellow Hungarian colleagues and scholars in his field. He does not intend to give lectures or to engage in research. Thus ALG, still active, would like to receive feedback on his research. The money the IREX awards is, however, too little to cover ALG's costs in the expensive Budapest. He asks György to sign and to send the letter immediately to meet the April 30 deadline. Hungarian

  Up until today György and his colleagues had entertained the hope that ALG might attend at least the second part of the University's jubille. He sees now that ALG has other plans. But the president has prepared a golden diplome for ALG, which they planned on handing over during a separate ceremony. He thinks that ALG needs to visit soon to receive his diploma in person. György sends information concerning the cultural life of Budapest, including the transition of his committee into a Hungarian Academy Subcommission. Hungarian

  ALG thanks the President of the University, Dr. Fülöp József, the telegram inviting him to the 350th anniversary celebration of the University, offering ALG a golden diplome. Due to the high price of the airfare from Stuttgart to Budapest, ALG was not able to attend the jubille ceremony. He also had to travel to Brussels, where his new book is being published. ALG intends to visit Budapest in February or March. He will be bringing with him the first copies of his newly printed book as a present to the President and to the Academy. This would also be a good time to receive his golden diplome, his professor friends from the Hungarian Academia attending the ceremony. ALG has graduated under Prof. Eckhardt with Summa cum laude.   ALG congratulates György for organizing the exhibition, which was very successful. ALG begs pardon for not visiting Budapest this time. First, he didn't have the funds to by the tickets. Second, ALG had to fly to Brussels where his new book is course of printing. The title of the book is "The University of Paris and its Hungarian Students and Masters. ALG, however, plans to visit Budapest early next year. He intends to hand over his new book at the Hungarian Academy and meanwhile to receive in person his golden diplome. ALG asks György to suggest a date when he is able to attend this ceremony. György is also to send a formal letter of invitation which ALG will forward to IREX for a travel grant.   ALG sends this notarized formal invitation, which states that he intends to cover all the travel expenses of his brother and his brother's wife upon their visit to the United States. He invites them for a three week visit. They need to forward this letter to the People's Democracy of Hungarian Passport and Visa section. Hungarian
• CALG 8/02.03 Letter : ALG to Gábriel Ottó 1984/1115
  ALG received the note of November 7 informing him that the family moved to California. ALG has his reservations concerning this sudden move. ALG is sad to note that Ottó did not say good bye to the family who invited them over for dinners many times in Dallas. The family called him and inquired about his nephew. ALG didn't know what to say. He encloses a picture of the tomb of Ottó's paternal grandparents, who were born and are burried in Pécs, Hungary. ALG asks him to keep the picture in respect since he would like Ottó to be an immigrant holding on to the soil of his ancestors. ALG does not want to interfere with Ottós plans in any way.   Ottó thanks ALG for the Christmas presents. He sends information concerning their new life as refugees in Dallas, Texas. The Hungarian community in Dallas helped the family buying furniture and a new car. Ottó invites ALG to visit. Hungarian

  Ottó and his family lives as a refugee in Austria. They are emigrating to the United States. He is sorry for the misunderstanding regarding his sponsor. If he waited for the Catholic League to sponsor him, his immigrant visa to America would have become void. He will always follow ALG's suggestions, just like he has done it in the past. But in this case he was obliged to accept the sponsor from Fort Wayne. Ottó thanks ALG for his effort, the letters, and calls he made to the United States Consulate to obtain a visa for them.   Ottó's is happy to note that they will depart on November 30 from Austria to the United States. They will fly with British Airways. He had to leave his dog and his car behind to his father, Ottó Sr. Ottó is sorry to have caused any inconvenience concerning their American sponsor.   Last week Eszter and Ottó received the American immigrant visa at the American Consulate. ALG's name, as close relative, was not mentioned there. The Charitas, though, that is searching for sponsors in America did inquire about their relatives. They have political asylum in Austria and therefore they can ask for an Austrian passport. In three weeks they will leave for America through the Charitas. Eszter hopes to have a better life in America than she has had in Hungary. Ottó and she invited Ottó Sr. to visit them next year.   Ottó is glad that the interview was successful and that they received the American visa. He thanks ALG for his guidance and for his help in this regard. The American consul inquired about their political views, which was crucial in letting them in the country. He informs ALG about the status of their sponsors. Depending on who sponsors them they could move either to California or close to ALG in Indiana. He is happy to be able to start a new life in America where the family will finally be free. Hungarian

  Ottó thanks ALG for the money. After not being able to make a living in Hungary, now he is happy to work in the Austrian refugee camp. But the family would like to move to America. Therefore he asks ALG to call the American Consulate in Vienna and mention them that Ottó, due to his political views and religious affiliation, was persecuted in Hungary. He hopes that the interview at the Consulate, in three weeks, will be successful and they will be admitted as refugees in America. Hungarian

  Finally Ottó left Hungary. They live and work at an Austrian refugee camp under the auspicies of the Government. They will seek political asylum. Ottó plans to move to America and used ALG's name as sponsor on the forms. He understands, however, if ALG can not afford to sponsor them financially, in which case the Charitas International Organization will do that. He sends his new address and asks ALG not to share that with his father in Budapest, Hungary -- Ottó had a misunderstanding with his new stepmother. Hungarian

  Ottó begs pardon for not writing sooner but he has been very busy studying. He attends the University and has two majors, one of them sports.   Ottó was busy this summer studying, working, and doing sports. He found a job with an American firm, where he got paid well for being a stunt man in the play Prince and the Pauper. He can't explain in this letter the reason why he was not able to travel to Yugoslavia to meet ALG. Ottó would like to discuss important family matters with ALG, but only personally.   Ottó reports that upon his arrival at the Chicago O'Hare Airport he lost his luggage containing his passport w/ the American visa, travel documents, and airline tickets. He encloses the lost and found case report of the Chicago police. Ottó inquires about the possibility to reissue his travel documents before 1973/0811, when he intends to return to Hungary. Hungarian

  This is the last letter ALG sends before Ottós son, Ottó- László Gábriel, leaves Hungary for America. ALG asks his brother to show this letter to his nephew and go over his instructions very carefully. ALG is glad that his nephew will be his guest for the first time, taking a summer English language course. He sends information concerning his travel, trips to New York and Chicago, and his stay at Notre Dame. ALG thinks that America is expensive and that nothing is for free. He paid $1387 for his nephew's summer costs, including tuition. ALG made all the arrangements for Ottó László to have a good first impression of this country.   ALG has made all the arrangements for his nephew, Ottó-László, to attend a summer course at Notre Dame. He will cover all his expenses, including airfair. ALG thinks it's imperative for his nephew to acquire a perfect command of English language and therefore he is willing to make this effort. ALG plans to show New York to Ottó-László while he is visiting. ALG sends this note to get his brother's approval of the trip. He hopes that Ottó will approve of it since his son needs to learn not only English but independence as well. As ALG needs to travel to Rome and Milan this summer, he will not be here with his nephew all the time. ALG intends to retire on September 1. ALG thinks that life is not as romantic as Mariska from Hungary thinks it is here in America. Life is cruel sometimes. And Ottó-László needs to see and experince that too. Hungarian

  Ottó begs pardon for his lag in writing but he was not only very busy but was laggard too. He sends information concerning the travel of his son. His passport application has been rejected. But now Prof. Klaniczay wrote a letter to the Ministry of Education asking for backing Ottó-László's trip. Ottó-László would like to imitate ALG in everything all the time and therefore Ottó hopes that he will be able to visit ALG this summer. He also learned about ALG's opportunity to visit Budapest in the Fall as a special guest of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Ottó congratulates ALG. Hungarian

  Ottó-László was happy to receive the notice that he is enrolled at Notre Dame. However, it is very difficult to arrange the acquisition of his passport so much the more that he is of military age. He asks ALG to get in contact with somebody at the Hungarian Academy. Should the academy back his application, he is to get a visiting passport for sure. Hungarian

  ALG sends information concerning Ottó-László summer plans. He thinks that they need to apply for his travel documents at the home office. The purpose of the trip is to learn English. In no case can Ottó-László's mother or father join him on the trip. It would not look good in fron of many America that an 18 year old boy hangs on to his mother. But ALG will be like a parent here and will take care of him. He will also guarantee Ottó-László's return to Hungary in front of the authorities. Hungarian

  Gedeon congratulates ALG on his eightieth birthday. He sends information concerning the material which was once in the Gyöngyös' archives in Hungary. Part of it is still the oldest Hungarian book collection ever and can be found in the former Orczy castle. The other part was taken to the Franciscans to Budapest, Hungary. Hungarian

• CALG 8/04.04 Letter : Dr. Ravasz László to ALG 1987/0423
  László, and the rest of the former pupils of the Gödöllő gymnazium, will always remember their Mass at Saint Michael's Church and the reception at the Intercontinental Hotel. These events marked ALG's last visit in Budapest, Hungary. A former student of ALG, Horváth Pista, wrote a few page memoire about his years at Gödöllő and asked László to forward it to ALG. The memoire shows that Norbertine professors were glad to offer help to the students even after graduation. Their letters of references promoted many pupils to Norbertine religious houses in the West. Hungarian

  Ili regrets that she was not able to attend Ottó's funeral services, but she has been very ill. She did, however, talk to Terike on the phone and they agreed to visit the tombstone soon. She will inform ALG about the condition of the tomb. After moving from Canada back to Hungary, Ili thinks that people in Budapest are not reliable. When she complained at a custom officer, the aswer was that "this is not capitalism". She misses her friends and relatives in Canada. She has some plans to meet ALG in October. Hungarian

He is happy that ALG has voiced his opinion about the lack of emphasis that is placed on scientific work and research at the Foundation. But he is shocked and unhappy to hear that ALG plans to resign. Béla asks ALG to change his mind. He lists the many undertakings he and the foundation recently started working on and for which they need ALG's help and advise. With the funding they can devote greater efforts to studies, research, and fellowships that ALG has missed.   Domonkos Laci informed ALG that he is working on his King Matthias monograph. There is only one chapter left for him to finish. Tibor is to wait until he is done and then have it published right away. ALG intends to attend the presentation of this book next year. In the meanwhile, he works on his own book, plans to finish it in February, and to publish it in Germany. ALG asks Tibor to suggest, with the help of György Székely, somebody who could represent Hungary in the Comittee International de Paleographie. ALG will make arrangements to nominate that person.
