  Mentions the opulent publication of "Les rapports dynastiques franco-hongrois au Moyen-Age". The book was written by ALG and dedicated to his porfessor, Eckhardt Sándor. It was published by the University Print, Budapest. ALG wrote the short introduction to it in 1944/0714 at Gödöllő, where he was the director of the St. Norbertin French College. But it is a mystery as to how a book that illustrates the French-Hungarian league could have been published just 4 months after the Nazi occupation. Hungarian

  Pál received ALG's letter, which he wrote in a hurry just before leaving for France, on April 18th. ALG promised that, in May, he will write in detail responding to Pál's inquiries. Up until today Pál has hoped that he might receive the letter. He sees now that it likely got lost in the mail. He encourages ALG to reply again and inform Pál of the Gödöllő events at the end of 1944, tough times that after all brought them together. Pál still works on the subject and encloses his article published in "Magyar Nemzet" in 1983. Hungarian

  Sándor hopes that ALG will receive this letter in time. Tomorrow he leaves for Madrid, Spain, to take part in the Congress. Sándor would like ALG to attend the congress also if he can. But by all means ALG is to fill out the forms and send them back to Madrid. In October Sándor intends to meet Bishop Tomori László and ALG in Amsterdam. From there they could all drive to Aachen, Germany, to visit the St. László Church. Sándor intends to have a sermon on Sunday at 10 a.m. in this church. He already asked Szigeti István to celebrate the mass. He hopes that ALG and him will meet somewhere soon as the prices of tickets go up and thus it will become difficult to travel around. Lately the Romanian immigration officer did not let him cross the border and sent him back to Hungary when he tried to visit his former professor at Nagyvárad, Romania. Hungarian

  Ottó sends information concerning the establishment of monastic quarters and a chapel in Gödöllő. Fényi Ottó initiated it already 5 years ago, put a new roof on the chapel, and soon it'll open its door. But to restart the St. Norbert Premontre Canonical gymnasium prooves to be more difficult task. Fényi Ottó, the priory of the St. Norbert Order, was told by an under-secretary of the attorney general that the state claims to donate few buildings and assets to the Church instead of giving them all back. The order is subsidized from money abroad, which is unsteady. Ottó thinks that foreign lenders should put pressure on the Hungarian government to give all the stolen assets back to the Catholic Church so they can start their new school: Today children need not only academic teaching but also good breeding as well. He attaches the newest pamphlet published by the Premontre Alumni Association of Gödöllo= dated 1992/0325. Hungarian

  He encloses a memorandum of the Premontre St. Norbert Canonical Order Alumni Association that contains pertinent information concerning the rebirth of the Canonical Gymnasium and the holy orders at Gödöllő. At the funeral of their former professor, Prof. Kumorovitz, students inquired about ALG. They have asked Ottó if ALG has plans to attend the reunion. Soon about 40 people from the order are taking a trip to Nagyvárad, Romania, to visit their former teacher and to attend his high mass. Hungarian

  Imre encloses an article, of June 9, 1992, about the restitution of the Premontre Canonical Order as its religious house is reestablished and its school reopens. • CALG 13/04.01 Letter : Loli and Hoensch Lóránd to ALG (Bumi) 1990/0312
  She thanks ALG for the letter he sent in December of last year. She informs ALG about the upcoming "Big" Reunion that will take place June 8th at Gödöllo=. It will be big because classes of several years will meet. She has already notified couple of their graduating classmates and former teachers living abroad: Prof. Tauszik, Waldbott Hansi, another representative of the Premontre Canonical Order from Insbruck, Austria, and Endrey Zalán as well. She is sad to note that her classmate, Freud Rudi, has recently passed away. Eva too sends her regards to ALG. Loli hopes that ALG will be able to attend the ceremony. Hungarian

  Due to the request of the Jesuits, ALG has visited Budapest for three days to dedicate the book "Essays in Church History". In the meanwhile he attended the 50th Reunion of his class that graduated in 1940. ALG complains to Hugo about the Canonical orders of Gödöllő: back then he suffered not only emotional but also physical pain in that building thus he decided not to visit them. Even today, he recites several reasons why he thinks he is left out in the cold: Fényi told him not to interfere in the rendition of the Gödöllő buildings from the state, despite the fact that ALG knows the current Prime Minister, József Antal, very well. Plus the order consistently ignores ALG's functions on memorandums, and they also claim that ALG has not helped them when in fact in 1990 the diocese received $25,000 from Mackin. In all, he has had bad memories at Gödöllő (people have always been nice to him in the USA but not at Gödöllő). However ALG identifies himself with Jászó, the place where he had received the tonsure from Takács Menyhért. ALG thinks that "Communitas Jasoviensis in Externis" would be a reasonable solution to the problem, but he asks Hugo's advice first. ALG has already made arrangements to lay him to rest in Philadelphia, the place where Raszlaviczy is burried. Hungarian

  Since ALG is not being kept posted about the sweeping changes happening in the provostship, Hugo sends information about both the Gödöllő (Hungary) and the Váradelöfoki (Oradea, Romania)) provostships. Although he lives in Rome, he is member of the latter and encourages ALG to declare his willingness to be a member of the Gödöllő priory. His name will mark the existence of "excisa viresci" and surely the new Communitás will be proud of him. ALG would then be under the bailiwick of Fényi Ottó, just like Albin and Csaba, who already sent in their memberships. Hungarian
• CALG 13/04.04 Letter : ALG to Ugo Márton 1991/0402
  He reflected a lot on Hugós advice of becoming part of the Gödöllő priory. But ALG has been degraded by them to such an extent that he thinks that this will be impossible. On the Latin membership list that has been recently sent out many of ALG's distinctions and honours were deliberately left out. Thus ALG was curtailed of his Golden Medal from the Pope, of his French cross of the legion of honour, and many others. Consequently he ended up somewhere at the end of the list. So his membership at Gödöllő is groundless because he has never sent in his consent. ALG has been living in America for 44 years now, as a citizen. In contrast he has spent, since his birth, only 40 years in Hungary. After wearing his holy orders gown for 65 years ALG will not tolerate such degradation from Gödöllő. Instead he will join the Praepositura Jasoviensis of Jászóvár, the shrine of which gives evidence of ALG's monastic vows. Hungarian

  Hugó is sorry to hear that ALG has no intention to be part of the Gödöllő provostship where Fényi Ottó had assumed ALG's membership based on his tacit approval. Due to a new resolution of the Holy See only two autonomous communities will exist: one in Gödöllő and the other in Várad. Now Hugó is glad that ALG made the decision to belong to Praepositura Jasoviensis, instead of a separate Communitas Jasoviensis in Exteris, which could not have been justified legally anyway. He asks ALG to contact Bartal Tamás, who will help him make the transition from Premontre Canonical Order of Gödöllő to the one of Jászóvár. Hugó is glad to hear that ALG's thoughtful intervention landed his doctoral thesis into ALG's Medieval Institute's collection. Hungarian

  Ottó sends information concerning the Gödöllő priorship, which ALG is a celebrated member of. Ottó faces difficulties in reclaiming the stolen church properties from the government. But when finally the new bill comes into being he'll know more about the statement of claim and then will inform ALG about the developments. Ottó would like ALG to send a picture of himself that will be attached to the article about ALG's recent TV interview in Budapest. He wishes good health to ALG for the upcoming years. Hungarian
• CALG 13/04.07 Letter : ALG to Fényi Ottó 1991/0801
  ALG has been waiting with his response until he could meet Robert Finnigan at Notre Dame and also could talk to Van de Ven after the prior elections. He asks Ottó to correct his rank and distinction on the Canonia Godolloiensis List that has been recently sent out: ALG is a honorary provost, a ranking that comes right after the prior. ALG also asks Ottó to mention in the Church Catalogue his ecclesiastic nomination from the Pope. ALG thinks he is pensionable and has the right to be compensated for the years 1938-1947. During those years, in that very building, as head of the school, he taught and worked for free, the Order pocketing all his salary. ALG suggests Ottó that the government should pay rent to them (since it is using the Church's buildings) and the incoming amount would cover his pension. On the American side ALG asked for pension, but to no avail, and now hopes that the Hungarian side will work out. On a personal note, ALG had suffered hardship under the German-Nazis when he saved several Jewish students' life in his French Gimnazium. As a result he has had to hide and his life was in danger. He encloses his doctorail nomination from the Ambrosia with the signature of the cardinal to attest his ranking and attaches a picture to it. ALG is concerned about the miserable state Hajnal Zsigmond is enduring and he doesn't want this news to reach the people who manage foreign aid to Hungary. On the same note ALG has heard that Ottó is doing very well financially. Hungarian

  He sends information regarding the new elementary and middle school that the Premontre Canonical Order at Gödöllő will start soon in the two buildings the Order got back from the state. His other plan is to reopen, or at least to start the legal procedure for, the collegiate school of theology that dates back to 1929. For that Ottó will petition a visiting lecturership for ALG who is extremely well known is academic circles both in Hungary and abroad and, consequently, ALG will be able to spend some time in Gödöllő. Hajnal Zsigmond has been very ill and had to be relocated to Pannonhalma where he will receive constant medical care. Hungarian

He asks ALG's advise in this regard. It would be helpful if ALG would know of any charitable trust in his wide acquaintanceship that would support and cover the expenses of such a research institute.   Medieval Scholar, Gábriel Asztrik, talks about the problems Hungarians are faced with in today's world. ALG thinks that in today's technological warfare soldiers need, even more than before, religious and cultural education so that they will be able to hear the voice of humanity coming from their hearts. Today the Hungarian army should look at the outstanding American army as an ideal and try to introduce strict discipline and authority again, which has been a tradition in the old Hungarian army too. Moreover, ALG, together with other fellow Hungarian emigrants around the world, are like dispersed Hungarian soldiers who work hard as doctors, artists, or factory workers and they all stand their ground. In all, ALG still feels close to the world and life of the many Hungarian Christian soldiers. Hungarian

  Article that appeared in "Hungarians of America", the largest Hungarian weekly in the Western World. He remembers when he, as a child, met ALG the very first time. His father and him have visited ALG in the Premontrei Gymnasium at Gödöllő, Hungary, to fill out the application forms. Back then ALG was the director of the French School. István still remembers ALG's words when they left: ALG congratulated him for being such a hefty little boy. Marianne looked at the IISTC (Illustrated Incunabula Short Title Catalogue) on CD and found that there are 159 Ulrich Gering original prints around the world. She has narrowed down the search by adding Martin Crantz and Michael Friherger, as a results she found 52 copies, 34 of which are located in the US (copies of Paris, Gering-Crantz-Friherger, 1473 are in three American Libraries).   He thanks Ottó for the letter regarding the reunion and the meeting with ALG. He has been a young boy when he had to move apart from ALG. Since then, however, he has been following his life, his works, he has seen him on TV, and read everything about him. Pali is a true follower of ALG. He always wanted to meet him and thank him the book he got from him as a present for his good French. It was ALG who suggested to him to become a parish priest instead of a Prémontré priest in order to better help his poor, peasant parents. He followed ALG's advice. Now unfortunately Pali will not be able to attend their 60th high-school graduation reunion because he is crippled, but his class mates and teacher will always have a soft place in his heart.   ALG writes in Hungarian, by hand, as he doesn't want György to think that he forgot the language after spending 53 years in America. But, usually, dictation to his secretary is much easier for him. ALG thanks György for the letter and the invitation. Should he live until August, he will be delighted to visit György in Pécs. He is sorry to say that he hobbles and walking makes him fatigue.   ALG has been busy traveling for three months in Europe due to his new book. He is sending a copy of it to István and letting him know that the cost of printing has been very high. The book reflects ALG's missionary intent in that he wanted to let Hungarians know that the old Hungarian students and professors, who were studying abroad five hundred years ago, adhered to Hungarian saints and to their reverence. ALG would appreciate it if István would write a short and a long exposé on the subject, depending on which Hungarian-language paper István, as general editor, wants to send it to. ALG has recently met with Umberto Eco at the Monumenta Germaniae Historica Congress. Hungarian

  The review is entitled "Students, Instructors, and Witnesses." Relying on highlights of the book, the author presents ALG's book as an important contribution to the general cultural history of Hungary proving that Hungary has always belonged to the Christian West, even half a millenium ago. The destruction coming from the East, like the Ottoman invasion of the Turks in 1526 and of the Soviet forces in 1956 just to name a few, could not and did not pull Hungary out of the recovery of its lost influence of Western civilization, claims Sárkány György. ALG's book testifies to this very trend drawing on many examples of young Hungarians studying and acting as deputies in Paris. Hungarian
