The emigration quotas have been revoked and Pircsi thinks now it's a good time to inquire about her case not in Sao Paulo but in Washington.   He asks ALG, again, for help in finding a non-academic position at Marquette University, Milwaukee. Lately, ALG kindly promised to help, but in order to do that he needs more details regarding Ferenc's case and his responsibilites in the past. Ferenc tells ALG about the work he has done in Hungary, including fleeing, in 1944, the very dismal conditions in Hungary. He encloses letters of references that gives evidence of his abilities and hard work both in Germany and in America. He thanks ALG for his kind help. Hungarian

  Pircsi would like to emigrate from Brazil to America. She encloses her sister-in-law's, Anna's, letter in which Anna is sharing the good news with her regarding the status of her application. She has heard it from good sources that soon Pircsi will get the entry permit to the States. The letter is dated 0923. Also, Hungarian Benedictines think much of ALG, saying how much help and how many opportunities ALG provided to his fellow brothers to help them come to America. Hungarian

  He thanks ALG for the offer to write an article in the weekly Hungarian newspaper, The American Hungarian. Miklós considers ALG's writings an honour to the magazin and hopes to receive not only one in the special Christmas issue but many more in weekday issues as well. He informs ALG about the success of the paper including its upcoming transformation into a national paper. This week the news came out about ALG's promotion to director of the Medieval Institute at Notre Dame. Miklós congratulates him for this great achievement and looks for to read ALG's writings.   Up until now Edit had hoped that ALG is going to contact her while he is in New York. Now she is the one who writes to update ALG on her new life as a governess at the Kardiner family. The family is rich and claim to be progressive. Edit has different ideals and has a different approach to life. Therefore she doesn't talk much with the family in order not to quarrel and is looking forward to the summer when her employment ends. She heard it from other friends that ALG got promoted and she would like to hear more details. Edit would be happy if ALG would call her when he visits New York again. Hungarian

  Siard complains of some of the hardships in the parish, such as the "common pool" the abbot just introduced. As a consequence he is not paid anything and whatever he needs he has to ponce from the parish priest, a very stingy person otherwise. Now Siard is a chaplain and teaches latin but later he would like to use his Phd degree in theology to start an academic career. He also asks ALG to send some information about Antonia Fodor, a Notre Dame employee. In fact it is Sr. Geraldine, a common friend, who indirectly asked ALG to send some information about Antonia. With this, she would like to help Orosz Márta, a lady who will be moving to America from Germany under Antonia's sponsorship. Hungarian

  He congratulates ALG for having such a wonderful career and carrying the world before himself. Feri fled the Russian invasion in Hungary, ending up in Montreal, Canada.   For one year, Lajos and his wife have been on the emigration list at the American Embassy of Rio de Janeiro. They also have an uncle in America who is supporting their move to the States. Szabolcs congratulates ALG for organizing Sorbonne's 700 year anniversary and informs him that an article has been publishes on this in his newpaper: Hungarians in South American. He would be happy if ALG would write articles for his newspaper every now and then. He also gave ALG's best regards to Eszenyi Olga.   Jeromos is glad to note that both lectures that ALG delivered in Paris -- one at the Sorbonne, the other at the Academy -- were impeccable. Due to more time at hand ALG had more success at the Academy but both talks were outstanding in terms of deliverance of the speech and content as well. Jeromos has never heard such great lectures, and even Marinescu's was weak compared to ALG's. With a few exceptions, such as the writer Balla Borisz, everybody was pleased. But then again Borisz causes annoyance everywhere he goes, not only to ALG. People in Jeromos's circle, those who belong to the Hungarian Catholic Church, don't have a great opinion on him anyway. Jeromos asks ALG to send that Lation quote he mentioned last time because he would like use it as a motto in his book. Hungarian

Also he sends two pieces of information, i.e. two articles, on the case of physicist Dr. Jánosy Lajos who, in 1950, returned to Budapest from England because his family back home had been threatened for two months by the Communist Government. He is a well known scientist specializing in atomic physics who now collaborates, doing experiments, with the Soviet authorities in the Caucasus. Hungarian

  She is sorry to hear that ALG is so tired. He should be resting more and doing things that he enjoys doing. Unfortunately their emigration to America has failed. Above all she is in the middle of a divorce, hoping to get married to Sznacky Antal, former army attaché in Italy, soon. ALG and her have known each other for a long time thus she would like to ask his advice on this big step in her life. She has suffered a lot for the past 25 years, even attempted suicide once, but now she thinks she is finally happy. She wishes all the best to ALG on his upcoming birthday. Hungarian

  He thanks for ALG's letter. Imre agrees with ALG that the League, in Vienna, is supporting the wrong people and its operations are unrealistic. On one hand they either help priests or aristocrats, on the other hand they help only those who fled Hungary early and had been party members. Imre gets everything he asks for from Ft. Flynn who works for the N.C.W.C. For ALG's information, Imre sends him the confidential news that Cardinal Mindszenty, head of the Roman Catholic Church in Hungary, is advocating wrong causes and is asking to aid people who don't really stand in need of help. Imre is sorry to hear that ALG works from early morning until late night. He urges ALG to take action to connect their former disciples and start organizing reuniouns. Before their deportation, Imre has delivered ALG's belongings to his brother while his books to Mr. Godefied. Hungarian

She regrets for not writing sooner because she remembers ALG long ago saying how happy he always is when receiving letters from Budapest; they all make him cheerful. However, Ida's feelings are hurt because when they needed help going through several hardships ALG didn't lift a hand to help them -- the family he was part of for nine whole years -- . She is sorry to be blunt when saying that ALG has been indolant. Ida asks ALG to send pictures of himself and to write either in Hungarian or English. Hungarian

  ALG's last postcards were very pleasing to her, but she hasn't yet received a response to her letter from last year. Ida informs ALG that their apartment, in which ALG spent so many years, had to be divided up into three smaller apartments due to current regulations. It was a miracle that lately Ida was issued a travelling passport and subsequently she plans to spend the next summer in Austria. Ida complains again that they live in misery and in strained circumstances -- her husband has just retired and is not allowed to work for extra cash -- yet they don't have any Hungarian friends abroad who might help them. If ALG lived under communism, he would surely understand her: Her husband had retired after 45 years of hard work yet he received pension only for 11 years -- the years he worked under the communist regime. Her father-in-law has been the cavalry's last commander under the Monarchy, which is a very bad point for them in Hungary. Ida informs ALG that lately many of his colleagues have landed in prison, such as a 66 year old lady, a relative of Ida, who will be under sentence for 5 years. Hungarian

  It has been 15 years since his class has left the nest built by ALG. He heard that since then ALG, among many others, chose the easy way out and emigrated. A couple of them stayed there and now it's time for remembrance. He hopes that ALG did not forget him and his own past just because he is now doing well and that he will write soon. Now, Ottó is disgraced to a quayside worker. He reminds ALG to keep his promise and pay a visit to them. He asks ALG whether he knows anything about the whereabouts of Tala, Molvány, and Gomperer who attended the same school. Hungarian

  She did not write sooner because she has been very busy and exhausted. The last time she heard from ALG was on the occasion of Irenke's death. Not only will ALG enjoy the fruits of his hard work, but also will succeed in promoting the Hungarian culture in throughout the world. He made the right choice. She wishes happy Christmas to ALG.   She apologizes for not writing for such a long time. Even now is hard to give a full account of the last 20 years in a brief letter. She informs ALG about her father's work and eventual death in 1952, about the horrors of the 1956 Revolution when their house was under direct bombardment, about her job at the Museum of Art, and about her 10 year old son, Gyula. The valuable Brueghel-book that ALG gave her before he left, unfortunately, got smashed during the revolution, but she still treasures it. She sends her great respect to ALG and asks him to bear them in his mind in the future. Hungarian

  Oláh Tibor told him about somebody taken a photograph of ALG in Yugoslavia. Also Ottó heard that, in 1973, ALG might be coming home to give a talk in Budapest. He is planning a surprise reunion with his classmates for this event. Everybody in the class would love to see their old Professor again. This would be something that nobody even dared to dream about couple of years ago. Exectly today, 28 years ago, the Russians had occupied Máriabesenyö, the place where Ottó is now. He remembers that later, on January 17, the monastic quarters in Gödöllö were evacuated and everybody, including ALG, had to leave. Hungarian
