- CALG 14/01.01 : Ottó to ALG 1948/1129
Ottó owes his brother an explanation as to why he has taken some of his left-over personal items from Norbertinum. It's not that he likes using other people's belongings. It was the harsh circumstances made him accept the coat, the grey suit, etc. Still he regrets it. In the future he would like to earn a living so he can provide for himself. Ottó asks ALG to send Norbertinum a letter explaining the situation. He just got back from, Pécs, the town where they had grown up. Flying back, the plane almost crashed in a storm, so now he is happy to be alive. He left their family house, in which their mother died recently, untouched. He also visited their parents' graves and placed two wreaths on them, one in the name of ALG. Standing there, he felt lonely and sad. Meanwhile Christams is coming up, which would only bring him more pain. ALG is the only person in the world Ottó could rely on. He explains that the political situation in Hungary is becoming unstable and he wants to emigrate. Ottó is concerned that waiting for a passport to emigrate would take a long time. Thus he would like to escape through the border. He visited ALG's friend, Mr. Ader, to ask for some advice in this regard. Mr. Ader said the situation in Chehszlovakia was even worse. Now Ottó is waiting until December 15th to make a decision as to escape or wait patiently for his passport. He hopes that ALG's letter will arrive by then. He heard that ALG would pay a visit to Mary in Toronto and kindly asked him to send a picture of her to him. Ottó is planning to send a Christmas card to her for Budapest. Hungarian

- CALG 14/02.01 Letter : Ottó to ALG 1949/1122
Ottó thanks ALG for his last letter, in which ALG expresses concern about his letters causing inconvenience to his brother. But Ottó responds that the letters are of no nuisance whatsoever since now Hungary is a free country where people choose freely who they correspond with. Thus opened or damaged letters received by ALG are just a postal clerk's insolence, nothing else. Ottó is making sure that ALG will be getting the books he requested from the library. He asks his brother to send him a list, typed on a letterhead, of the titles the university needs. With this letter, he will then go and ask his friend, Dr. Szabó Tóni, for help. Ottó is sorry for ALG spending Christmas alone. His plan is to spend Christmas, just as before, in their family home at Pécs, where their father passed away. Ottó has always been a true blue Hungarian. Subsequently he will fight for his land, the house and for all the memories attached to them. Meanwhile Ottó tries to deliver some of ALG's belongings to Mr. Paulay, as ALG requested. But he is not able to get in touch with them. Hungarian

- CALG 14/03.01 Letter : Ottó to ALG 1950/0214
Ottó thanks his brother for the package and the two letters. Yet he is upset because, reading in between the lines, ALG has been critical of his faults and shortcomings. Ottó asks ALG to be more honest and not to sugarcoat the probems they have between them. He calls for open comment. ALG's second letter, which, again hurt his feelings gave him the impression that ALG sends him packages only to get rid of him for a while. Still, he asks ALG to spend a few minutes of his time and write a brief letter to his only brother. Now Ottó is being very irate but he will get over it. He has sent ALG's book requests to the Main Library and hopes that they will resolve the matter soon. Hungarian
- CALG 14/03.02 Letter : Ottó to ALG 1950/1102
Ottó complains about his financial situation and thanks his brother for the package he sent again. He sends information concerning the family estate in Makár, close to Pécs. Unfortunately, wine-growing is not profitable any more due to the huge taxes, so Ottó is not really interested in harvesting grapes any more in the future. He wants, however, to keep the land especially the part that's his. Ottó is afraid to leave his current job at the university print and find better employment. If he quits, he is going to end up on the black list of the Secret Service and they will pester him with questions. On behalf of lawyer Perlaky Gyula, he asks ALG to send some records. On the weekend, on the way home from church, he has met many old friends, including Szénási Béa. Hungarian
- CALG 14/03.03 Letter : Ottó to ALG 1950/1218
Ottó informs his brother that according to Hungary's official gazette, the Hungarian state appropriated all of ALG's assets and belogings in Hungary, including his citizenship. Government officials assesed the value of the property and then partitioned it. But Ottó has just been informed about a new government decree which would allow him to buy back the allegedly abandoned premises. He asks ALG's opinion about this and sends best wishes for Christmas. Hungarian

- CALG 14/04.01 Letter : Ottó to ALG 1951/0119
Ottó is concerned about ALG because he didn't respond to his letters. Having sent two letters already, he stresses the point again that it wasn't the package he was really waiting for but a few kind words from his brother. He sends information to ALG about the family asset. Unfortunately, he needed to sell it to Gábriel Pista, their relative, in order to be able to pay off Pali. But the selling was only formal and therefore he could keep his part. ALG's share of the property belongs to the state anyway and there is nothing that can be done about it. Hungarian
- CALG 14/04.02 Letter : Ottó to ALG 1951/0312
Ottó informs ALG that he received the package, the money for the vineyard expenses and also ALG's three letters. He is upset at Pali because if he had not told everybody that ALG lives in America, the government would not have taken over the land. He asks if ALG had received the books sent by the Main Library from Budapest. Lately, he has mailed the pictures of ALG as a soldier together with his parents. He is ill with his throat and as soon as he gets better will write a long, more informative, letter. Hungarian
- CALG 14/04.03 Letter : Ottó to ALG 1951/0329
Ottó was very happy to receive the packages ALG has sent him. It improves his financial situation and now he can dress well. Everybody in the office liked the photo of ALG standing next to his new black car. Unfortunately, the postoffice returned the pictures of ALG back to Ottó. He wants, therefore, to try another way to ship it. Ottó had just renovated his new and spacious apartment for Easter. He is glad to have such a caring and good brother. Hungarian
- CALG 14/04.04 Letter : Mária Tarr to ALG 1951/0331
On behalf of Ottó, Mária is thanking the presents and sends her respect to ALG. She askes him to address the letters to her until Ottó stays in hospital. Hungarian
- CALG 14/04.05 Letter : ALG to Ottó 1951/0401
ALG responds to his brother 03/29 letter from The Institute of Advanced Study, Princeton, New Jersey. He is glad that he is not at home now. Lately he gets frustrated often and then he would drive along the long roads of New Jersey to blow off the air. He doesn't keep in touch with people too much, thus feeling lonesome many times. But it's worth living such a secluded life since it is in the name of scientific truth. Above all, ALG is trying to avoid fellow Hungarians who bragged about their prosperity not long ago, but in fact they are utterly poor. ALG is asking Ottó to take good care of his parents' graves. This is his only earnest request from his brother. He wants Ottó not to forget them. Since Ottó has always been his parents favorite little son, he will, in turn, be of assistance to Ottó and to his future family. ALG regrets that, because of sheer bad luck, he couldn't spend enough time with his parents while they were alive. He plans this summer to sell his old car and buy a new Landcruiser that is the biggest car offered by Studebaker. He knows that it's Ottós favorite. He also asks a favor from his brother to invite Mr. Horanszky Imre over to his apartment. Hungarian
- CALG 14/04.06 Letter : Mária Tarr to ALG 1951/0402
Mária is asking ALG to send some money to cover the huge health care costs of his brother, saying that she'll be taking care of him faithfully. She will write often to let ALG know about his condition. Hungarian
- CALG 14/04.07 Letter : Mária to ALG 1951/0411
Mária is optimistic and hopes that with time and patience ALG's brother will recover from diphtheria. Until then she will regularly visit him in the hospital. Since they make good money by selling coffee or tea, she is asking ALG to send more next time. She thanks for the letter and reassures ALG to follow his advice. Hungarian
- CALG 14/04.08 Letter : Mária Tarr to ALG 1951/0414
Mária sends information about Ottó becoming very sick with his throat and eventually ending up in the hospital. He would be very happy if ALG visited sometimes so he could see his brother once more. She sends her best regards to ALG. Hungarian
- CALG 14/04.09 Letter : Mari Tarr to ALG 1951/0426
Mária received ALG's package. She had sold some items from it, on the street, right after she picked up the package, coming out of the building. Mária is complaining about Cuca's health and the rising costs this entails. Above all, doctors cost the most. Since they can't keep up with the huge standing expenses, following ALG's advise, they will sell the apartment. As a loyal former student of ALG, she is sending her best regards. Hungarian
- CALG 14/04.10 Letter : Mária to ALG 1951/0427
She thanks ALG for the package, for the letter and the nice poem entitled "For my mother". ALG is being very kind to look after not only her but other former students of his too. Allegedly she has been conspiring with the enemy and, thus, she was kicked out of the university. But she can't proove her innocence since seven people gave false evidence against her. All this is a hoax. She is going to write again soon, before and also after her tonsil surgery. Mária sends her best regards to her former Professor. Hungarian
- CALG 14/04.11 Letter : Mária to ALG 1951/0605
Mária thanks ALG for the package and for his letters. She informs him about their common friends, Olga and Pali, being ill. She also regrets that ALG has confused her with another women who used to work at the university print, Bencs Mária. She will send a picture of herself soon. Hungarian
- CALG 14/04.12 Letter : Mary to ALG 1951/0608
Mary send best wishes to his former professor and informs him about Olga's illness. Hungarian
- CALG 14/05 Folder : [Family Correspondence] 1952
- CALG 14/05.01 Letter : Ottó to ALG 1952/1118
Ottó thanks his brother for the package and the letters. He is indebted to ALG for his financial and emotional support when he needed it most. While he was sick, Mária cared for him, day and night, for 40 days. But he thinks that she is not being honest enough. Therefore he is planning to break off the relationship. He asks ALG's advice in this regard. He still can't leave Budapest's territory. The political situation is not as frightening as before, but still ALG's file is not yet closed. Above all, the authorities had not yet issued a bill of indictment against ALG. Subsequently, he has found employment only in a factory working 12 hours a day doing manual labour. Also the pay is very low. He asks ALG to pray for him and sends his best wishes. Hungarian

He asks ALG to send some more cigarettes. Hungarian
- CALG 14/07 Folder : [Family Correspondence] 1954
- CALG 14/07.01 Letter : Ottó to ALG 1954/0524
Ottó thanks ALG for the package and congratulates him for his trip to Paris. Since he has never liked being indebted to anyone, he is now getting married. But Mary and Ottó will postpone the church ceremony until ALG will be home. A lady in Pécs is taking care of the parents' graves, cleaning them once every month. Hungarian

Ottó is sorry for not having written much lately but he was busy. He sent ALG a picture from the time ALG has been a soldier. They send best wishes for his nameday. Hungarian
- CALG 14/08.04 Letter : Ottó to ALG 1955/1115
Ottó is being angry because the police is still pestering him. After explaining them the same thing over and over again, that ALG is a university professor doing scientific research in America and that Ottó sends letters to him because ALG is his only close relative in the world, the authorities still give him a hard time. He owes nobody any explanation as to why he keeps in touch with his own brother and despite the hardship, he will keep writing to ALG in the future, namely, twice a month. On behalf of the whole family he sends heartfelt best wishes for ALG's 48th birthday and for Christmas and promises that everybody in the family will pray for him on his birthday. Hungarian
- CALG 14/08.05 Letter : Ottó to ALG 1955/1212

Ottó lists the items included in the package and he is glad to hear that they are all useful. Recently, he has been rehabilitated and then promoted to be the manager of a machine-factory. Ottó asks ALG to send their cousin's, Gábriel Franci's, address who lives in Austria. The reason for his request is that the political situation is improving and he might be able to travel to Austria. He has heard that there are no more restrictions on traveling back and forth from the United States. Hungarian

- CALG 14/10 Folder : [Family Correspondence] 1957
- CALG 14/10.01 Letter : Ottó to ALG 1957/0107
The ordeal caused by the revolution is slowly coming to an end. Ottó can't find the words to describe the hardship he and his family went through. The most fierce fights happened exactly in their neighborhood, in the ninth district. At times, during several bombardments, he had to lay down the floor and to protect the little Ottó László, with his own body. There was no place to escape the shellings. Because of the cold he got sick and now is struggling with heart problems. Later this year Hungarians will be issued travelling passports. He asks ALG to help him, through his connections, to obtain tourist visas to either France or Germany. Hungarian
- CALG 14/10.02 Letter : Ottó to ALG 1957/0123
Ottó is complaining about his health and wants to talk to ALG in person. He needs a visa to be able to visit him in America. - CALG 14/10.03 Letter : Ottó to ALG 1957/0212
Ottó assures ALG of the condition of their parents' graves. The rumors ALG has heard that it's not being taken care of as it should be, are false. Although Ottó is not in Pécs to do it himself, he did ask somebody local, Liktor Lajos, to manage them on a regular basis. Meanwhile, he is dealing with couple of serious personal problems right now and wishes he could talk to ALG in person. Hungarian
- CALG 14/10.04 Letter : Mari to ALG 1957/0605
She is asking ALG to send vaccines to her son, as soon as he receives this letter. It's very urgent, because the paralysis epidemic has already reached their neighborhood and there is a considerable shortage and thus great demanand in shots here. Hungarian
- CALG 14/10.05 Letter : Ottó to ALG 1957/0618
He is trying to coordinate the meeting with ALG. Either Montreal or Paris would work for him. He urges ALG to send the letter of support for his passport. Meanwhile, he is working on buying back the appropriated vineyard from the state. He is looking forward to see ALG soon and sends best wishes for his nameday. Hungarian
- CALG 14/10.06 Letter : Ottó to ALG 1957/0817
Ottós passport is delayed and he doesn't entertain the hope any more to be able to travel this summer. Next summer would be another option. He sends information about how much it would cost to renovate their parent' graves. Also, asks ALG for his phone number. Hungarian
- CALG 14/10.07 Letter : ALG to Ottó 1957/0820
ALG sends a note informing his brother that he made arrangements for the vaccine to be sent by his friends via New York and Switzerland. Ottó should have received it by now. Meanwhile Ottós French travel visa is waiting to be picked up at the consulate of Budapest. Another visa for his son, Ottó- László, has been issued as well. This is a tremendous priviledge since no one is issued a visa without already owning a valid passport. But Ottó is still waiting for his. ALG received this information directly not only from the French Foreign Ministry, but also from Francois Sedoux, the French ambassodor in Vienna. ALG has been kept busy working the last couple of weeks. Above all, he can't take any vacation days off this summer. He invites his brother to visit him next May, or any other month that is more convenient for him. ALG can't be reached through September 15 because of his move to another university. In fact, everything at Notre Dame, such as restaurants and dormitories, will be closed down temporarily for maintenance. Hungarian

- CALG 14/10.09 Letter : Ottó to ALG 1957/1110
Ottó is still in hospital and has already lost 30 lb. Before his illness, Ottó travelled to Pécs to resolve the issue regarding their estate. He is happy to note that he managed to buy back all the illicitly confiscated assets by the state, that is, their family home and vineyard. Unfortunately both are run-down to such an extent that it would take years to renovate it. He sends heartfelt and warm wishes on ALG's 50th birthday on behalf of his son Ottó- László as well. Hungarian

Ottó informs ALG about the estate. The case is not yet closed because of the disagreement between the tenant and him. With the help of Dr. Róma, he would like to sell a valuable, fine statue for some extra cash. Many old friends and acquaintance from Budapest started to show interest in ALG's whereabouts, but Ottó thinks that most of these inquires are not sincere and that people have hidden agendas. Hungarian

The whole family and also a good friend of them, Dr. Róma, all wish happy Easter to ALG. Hungarian

Ottó informs ALG about his plan to file a suit against Szabó László. This person is still illegaly renting their land from the state and occupying the house. He explains the details and the procedure regarding the lawsuit. The local authorities declared that the tenant took over the vineyard through a fraud, but the official contract that led to this, even if wrongful, can only be terminated by the court. He then asks ALG to send immediately a letter of request to his lawyer, Dr. Büky Ernö, who is handling the case. Hungarian

She expects to have financial difficulties for a while because of the huge moving expenses. Now that they have a spare room, she invites ALG to pay a visit to Budapest next year and stay with them for two weeks. She also asks ALG to send some clothes for his four year old son. But she asks this in secret, not to upset Ottó, who is still at Pécs trying to solve the problems with the vineyard. Hungarian
- CALG 14/11.08 Letter : Ottó to ALG 1958/1017
He thanks ALG's for his last letter, in which he said that he intends to travel to European capitals in the summer. For Ottó visiting Paris, Brussels, and Vienna will be just a dream. He has done his best to get a passport, but for no apparent reason, the authorities denied his application. Ottó explains in detail again the compicated situation regarding the vineyard. He speculates that ALG might still be the partial owner. He also plans to sell his share to a friend in order to buy something closer to their home in Budapest. Buzády Károly will carve the gravestone of parents by November. He asks ALG's opinion about the inscription on the stone. Hungarian
- CALG 14/11.09 Letter : Mary to ALG 1958/1230

- CALG 14/12.02 Letter : Ottó to ALG 1959/0616
He is glad to hear that ALG will be taking trips throughout Europe this summer. Since it's almost impossible to get a travelling-passport in Hungary, there isn't the faintest hope for him to travel abroad. The application is very expensive and, above all, people get rejected at the end. His plan is to exhumate their mother's body in the summer and then to renovate the gravestone of their parents in the fall. He sends heartfelt wishes for ALG's nameday. Hungarian
- CALG 14/12.03 Letter : Ottó to ALG 1959/1120
Ottó thanks ALG for his letters. When ALG has called them from Vienna, the first time in so many years, he was happy to hear ALG's voice again. It brought back nice memories, such as when, as a child, he had heard his brother, standing under the Christmas tree dressed in white cassock, telling a story about a lonely man spending the holiday alone. Today, he is still captivated by this story. But he is also sad because his parents loved ALG more than him. Now it would be nice to share memories together, however, they lived so much apart that they don't have any. Hungarian
- CALG 14/12.04 Letter : Mary to ALG 1959/1221

- CALG 14/13.03 Letter : Ottó to ALG 1960/1125
It is with deepest gratitude and emotion that he thanks his brother for dedicating his latest book to him. Now, through the book, he is able to travel in the world and declare everywhere the importance of brotherly love. In two years, he is planning on exchanging his car to a new Opel. For this transaction he will probably need ALG's help, using his connections in higher circles. Hungarian

Ottó is asked by his company to spend couple of days in Lipcse, Germany, in March. Since he will not be allowed to bring a lot of foreign currency with him, he asks ALG if he would send around 300 DM. If ALG sends some money to his friend in Lipcse, Ottó would pick it up from there. He is dangling the hope to meet ALG in Lipcse this summer. Hungarian
- CALG 14/14.02 Letter : Ottó to ALG 1961/0203
