"The Church and the Arms Race" ~ A copy of the address Gordon delivered at the second Bishop's Day of Peace, printed in The Catholic Worker ~ Gordon starts by saying that the general situation regarding the arms race and war has not changed much. He asserts that although the Vatican has issued the most explicit statement against war and violence, many Catholics are unaware of it. Gordon goes on to summarize past peace day messages, and says that despite them all, the arms race goes on unabated. He says that the Church is failing in significant ways which has marred its effectiveness in issues of war and peace. Gordon contends that a failure of communication is characteristic of the Church at all levels, and that a similar attack should be mounted against war by the Church as the one against abortion. He asks if there is a definite publication date yet and gives some suggestions on how to promote the book. Secretary, International Scholars Symposium Planning Committee ~ Hubert Locke officially invites Gordon Zahn to attend the International Scholars Symposium. ~ Locke invites Zahn on "behalf of the International Scholars Symposium Planning Committee." Zahn is invited to participate as a Scholar-Respondent. Scholar-Respondants function as the principal discussants of the six papers and are invited to prepare their own paper for presentation. Regrettably the Symposium Committee is unable to offer partial subvention of travel and housing costs for Scholar-Respondants. Locke enclosed a list of the major speakers and the titles of their respective addresses.

John Bolduc ~ Campus Ministry at Notre Dame Institute in Maine ~ Correspondence regarding Gordon visiting the Institute. ~ 10/9 -- John tells Gordon that there is not much activism or heavy thought on campus and he is trying to stimulate some. He asks Gordon to come speak on pacifism in November. 10/14 -- Gordon says he is willing and asks for a better idea of the format for the sessions. 10/19 -- John says the format is unstructured, he simply want to give students some serious ideas to think about. 11/4 -- Gordon says he will talk on Catholic pacifism and says travel is not a problem. 11/6 -- John asks Gordon if he can focus on the general Chrisian tradition in his talk since the institution is no longer Catholic.

Tom Cornell / CPF ~ Correspondence back and forth between Gordon and Tom ~ 5/29--Gordon writes Tom wishing him a speedy recuperation from his illness. He says the UNSSD demonstrations went well and the Catholic participation was gratifying, making the largest showing of any group there. He says the Merton symposium in Vancouver was also successful, and writes about the financial situation for his trip to Belfast as a CPF participant. 6/7--Tom says he is feeling better, that all events went off well without him, and that he doesn't see a problem in the financing of the Belfast meeting. He says the statement issued by the Boston Archdiocese Justice and Peace Commission is encouraging, although he has some disagreement with the arguments about the neutron bomb. 7/5--Gordon mentions the finances for Belfast again, saying he will contribute back the costs. He says the meetings were interesting, and he was evacuated from his hotel in Belfast due to a bomb threat. He refers to the neutron bomb issue and the irony of the save building / kill people approach.

The draft of the contract negotiations put together by the administration is regarded by the faculty as ridiculous and embarrassing to an academic institution. Oswald Tippo writes a long letter of protest, as does Gordon. President Wood responds and includes a copy of the Statement Trustee Policy to show the good will of the administration. ~ 1/26, 3/3, 3/9
