He says that this article had significant impact on him and encouraged him in his course as a conscientious objector. He expounds on the atrocities of war, the immorality of indiscriminately bombing both combatants and "innocents" in war and the evil of preparing to unleash future massacres with our nuclear weapons. The article and another article written by Gordon for Newsletter for Religion Teachers are included. ~ 9/81--Pax Christi is quoted as condemning the government's decision to develop the neutron warhead, and criticizes Reagan for announcing the decision at a time when peace associations were recalling the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. 10/81--Gordon says that although the church has made steps to provide support to those facing questions of military service, many parishes and bishops need to do much more. He outlines what he thinks the fears of the church are in giving this support and counters with reasons the church needs to get more involved and meet its responsibilities.

A letter to the editor of THE WITNESS by John is included. ~ In light of Carter's second call for draft registration, Gordon reflects upon the church's recent pledge to provide counseling and support to those facing questions of military service. He says that although some churches have make steps, many have not made any. Gordon asserts that the church is failing in its responsibility to counsel on conscientious objection and the result is that young people face moral challenges when they are not fully aware of the implications. The first and second drafts of the essay are attached. ~ 5/11--editor of U.S. CATHOLIC thanks Gordon for his article submission, and says that they will not use it. 5/14--Gordon's article is returned from Robert Bently Publishing. 5/15--Gordon writes to the editor of AMERICA with a revised edition of a previous article submitted for publication. 5/29--Joseph of AMERICA says that Gordon must provide a more clear outline of what Bishop O'Connor's book is about before they will publish the essay. 6/3--Gordon writes with a 2nd revised edition and informs Joseph that an official registry of Catholic CO's has been approved by the bishop if the draft should be reinstated. 6/19--the editor of AMERICA apologizes to Gordon, but says that they will not publish his article because they do not think the book is worthy of the attention. 7/2--Gordon writes to editor of COMMONWEAL asking him to consider his article for publication saying that it is important and timely. 7/4--Gordon writes to Joseph of AMERICA, expressing his disappointment and opinions of the excuses Joseph gave for not publishing the essay. In his essay, Gordon recounts Bishop O'Connor's support of war, summarizing his many arguments that justify support for the military and just war concept while countering with a pacifist response.

  Harold Josephson ~ Editor of Biographical Dictionary of Modern Peace Leaders ~ A series of letters between Gordon and Josephson with forms from the Biographical Dictionary and with Gordon's article written as an entry. ~ Josephson writes to Gordon telling him that he was recommended to write an essay for the Biographical Dictionary. Gordon responds saying that he would love to, but not on the person that was proposed to him, and suggested someone else to do so. Josephson replies asking Gordon to write a piece on Franz Jaegerstaetter. Gordon agrees and his essay about how and why Jaeggerstaetter was a peace leader is included. Forms about the length, style, and form of the essay are attached as well as a statement telling about the purpose of the proposed Dictionary. ~ correspondence took place between 3/10 and 10/10.
