He says that this article had significant impact on him and encouraged him in his course as a conscientious objector. He expounds on the atrocities of war, the immorality of indiscriminately bombing both combatants and "innocents" in war and the evil of preparing to unleash future massacres with our nuclear weapons. "The Church in the World: News and Notes" "Draft Registration: A Moral Choice" ~ 9/19--A short note to Gordon from Mary Evelyn of Pax Christi saying that she included an article in which Pax Christi was mentioned several times, and she thanks Gordon for his draft of the statement used in the article. The article and another article written by Gordon for Newsletter for Religion Teachers are included. ~ 9/81--Pax Christi is quoted as condemning the government's decision to develop the neutron warhead, and criticizes Reagan for announcing the decision at a time when peace associations were recalling the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. 10/81--Gordon says that although the church has made steps to provide support to those facing questions of military service, many parishes and bishops need to do much more. He outlines what he thinks the fears of the church are in giving this support and counters with reasons the church needs to get more involved and meet its responsibilities.

A letter to the editor of THE WITNESS by John is included. ~ In light of Carter's second call for draft registration, Gordon reflects upon the church's recent pledge to provide counseling and support to those facing questions of military service. He says that although some churches have make steps, many have not made any. Gordon asserts that the church is failing in its responsibility to counsel on conscientious objection and the result is that young people face moral challenges when they are not fully aware of the implications. In his essay, Gordon recounts Bishop O'Connor's support of war, summarizing his many arguments that justify support for the military and just war concept while countering with a pacifist response.
