Arrival in New York City
Even after an absence of only one year or two, one is surprised to find this city has changed faster and more dramatically than any other metropolis on earth. With the two new towers of the World Trade Center, the skyline of New York has changed completely. Also, the results of urban renewal with its new high-rises along Broadway between 42nd and 56th streets are stunning. On the other hand, the declining passenger steamship traffic has left the piers on the Hudson River deserted. New York is losing its significance as the main harbor of entry to North America. It is, however, holding its position as the business and financial center of the United States if not the world. The sheer abundance of material goods and the display of wealth are overwhelming. The cultural and ethnic diversity of the city is extremely fascinating. There is nothing like it any-where else in the world. New York will always remain unfinished, here the process of the American melting pot is continuously in the making.
Ankunft in New York
Selbst nach einer Abwesenheit von nur einem oder zwei Jahren ist man überrascht festzustellen, dass diese Stadt sich schneller und dramatischer verändert hat als irgendeine andere Metropole in der Welt. Mit den zwei neuen Türmen des World Trade Center hat sich die Skyline von New York vollständig verändert. Auch das Ergebnis der Stadterneuerung mit den neuen Hochbauten den Broadway entlang zwischen der 42. und 56. Strasse ist verblüffend. Andererseits sind durch den Niedergang der Passagierschifffahrt die Piers am Hudson River verlassen zurückgeblieben. New York verliert seine Bedeutung als Hauptankunftshafen in Nordamerika. Es hält jedoch seine Position als Handels- und Finanzzentrum der Vereinigten Staaten, wenn nicht der Welt. Der pure Überfluss an materiellen Gütern und die zur Schaustellung des Reichtums sind überwältigend. Die kulturelle und ethnische Vielfalt der Stadt sind äusserst faszinierend. Dem ist nichts irgendwo in der Welt gleichzustellen. New York wird immer unfertig bleiben, der Prozess des amerikanischen Schmelztiegels ist hier fortlaufend im Entstehen.
