Maxwell, Father James and Father John Brady

Procedures for the provision of the parish of Sainte Genevieve in Illinois in the person of James Maxwell and for the curacy of Natchez in the person of John Brady, Religious Carmelite.

1) The Bishop has been notified by the Quartermaster general of these Provinces in his official letter of August 12th of the Royal Order of April 12, 1795, in which His Mag(?)esty appointed Father James Maxwell and the Carmelite John Brady to the spiritual administration of these Provinces.

2) The Bishop decrees: a) That since they have arrived, they must be sent where it is most urgent, in this case, the parish of Sainte Genevieve whose Pastor Father (Paul de Saint Pierre) has been sent to New Orleans, and that of Natchez whose Pastor, Francisco Lennan cannot take care of all matters because of the great number of parishioners, according to Baron de Carondelet's information. b) That, therefore, he destines Maxwell to the parish of Sainte Genevieve with other commissions too, and Brady as an assistant of the pastor of Natchez. c) Finally, that an official letter is to be sent to the Baron de Carondelet whose answer will be awaited before giving Maxwell and Brady their respective titles. 1) The Bishop notifies the Baron that after having examined the qualifications of Maxwell and Brady, he destines the former who knows French quite well to the parish of Sainte Genevieve in Illinois whose pastor Fr. (Paul de St. Pierre) has been called back for reasons known to the Baron and the latter to Natchez where the only Pastor Francis Lennan cannot take care of all matters.

2) Moreover, the Bishop asks the Baron if he agrees to answer him in order he may appoint the priest and if the Baron objects to notify him in order he may come to an understanding with the Baron. Signed by the Bishop of Louisiana.

The Baron authorizes the Bishop to appoint Maxwell to the parish of Sainte Genevieve, and Brady to that of Natchez. Signed by the Baron de Carondelet.
--There is a note, dated Sep. 9, 1795, on the top of the first page of Carondelet's letter by the Bishop ordering it to be added to the procedures.

The Bishop decrees:

1) That since Paul de St. Pierre, pastor of Sainte Genevieve in Illinois, has been sent for to N. Orleans, he in agreement with the Vice Royal Patron appoints Father James Maxwell to that parish to administer the Holy Sacraments of Baptism, Penance, Eucharist, Extreme Unction, and Matrimony, with all the obligations of his ministry.
2) That Maxwell is to be considered as a provisional pastor and that besides the monthly forty "pesos" granted by the King, he is to enjoy all the other privileges attached to his position. Signed by the Bishop of Louisiana and witnessed by Rivas.

The Bishop decrees:
1) That, since Father Francisco Lennan, pastor of Natchez, needs an assistant, the Bishop in agreement with the Vice Royal Patron appoints the Carmelite John Brady as lieutenant of the pastor and subject to him, to administer the Holy Sacraments, dividing up with the pastor the work and also the income and emoluments.
2) That as a curate of the pastor he is to receive, besides the monthly forty "pesos" granted by the King, the half of the privileges proper to his charge. Signed by the Bishop of Louisiana and witnessed by Rivas.

to Francisco Rendon, Quartermaster general and of the royal Exchequer of these Provinces.

1) The Bishop notifies Rendon of the appointments with the permission of Vice Royal Patron of Maxwell and Brady to Sainte Genevieve and Natchez respectively.
2) Moreover, the Bishop asks Rendon to make a record of it in the Auditorship, that this having done, the parties may be notified of it and leave for their destination. Signed by the Bishop of Louisiana and witnessed by Rivas.

Rendon notifies the Bishop that a record has been made in the main Auditorship of the Army of the appointments of Maxwell and Brady, the documents concerning which Rendon sends back to the Bishop with this requirement. Signed by Francisco Rendon.
--To this is added a note by the Bishop ordering the above letter to be added to the procedures.
