Its world premiere had been in London in 1928 with a 21-year-old Laurence Olivier in the lead role of Stanhope. It was a huge success, in spite of (or because of) its being a 'war play with no leading lady,' with 14 English-speaking companies performing it by 1929 and 17 in other languages world wide.
